You can look in www.theaa.com or www.smoothhound.co.uk. I think the English Tourist Board also has lists of acommodations.

valm, we've had pretty good luck staying in places listed in Bed and Breakfast Nationwide. Here is the link to their lake district B&Bs:

Carlisle is too far north and would mean a lot of drving in and out of the Lake District. Kendal is gateway to the southern lakes. What about Ambleside or Grasmere- much more central
