Lac Leman - Chexbres - Hotel Cecil - Stay here? If so, 3 nights or 2?

Okay I finally made my plans and was all set to book everything: 2 nights on Lac Leman in this little lakeside village, then 5 nights in Wengen in the Bernese Oberland. Well I went to book the hotel and found out that you can stay 3 nights for the price of 2!

One concern is whether there is enough to see/do in this area for 3 full days and whether it's worth giving up a day in the BO. (We arrive in Geneva around 8:30 a.m. on day 1) Especially considering that the hotel I'm looking at is not actually in Vevey or Montreux.

Has anyone ever seen this place (Hotel Cecil in Chexbres?) Having a hard time getting a feel for the surroundings. How far is it actually from the water? What type of view might you have? And I'm trying to figure out how late the trains/buses would run to this little village; my proficiency with the swiss rail web site isn't that high yet and there seem to be like 5 stations listed with Chexbres in the name and I don't know which one is 300 m from the hotel; looking at a map, it seems like there is just a "Chexbres" station but that isn't an option in the pull-down list.

Can someone help me?

And the answer to the first question to be asked is that I can only find really expensive hotels available in Vevey and Montreux. I'm thinking maybe that Jazz festival is going on. So if we can't find anything affordable for the lake experience we'll just head to the mountains early.

Ok apparently I'm talking to myself, since I haven't been able to view current posts for the last several hours I assume nobody else can either. Since this is during the Jazz Festival in Montreux I am guessing that this may be the best I'm going to be able to get if I want to stick with my 2 days on the lake thing....
Here are my options.

Hotel Cecil: in Chexbres. Described as being in the "Heart of Lavaux vineyard" and being "surrounded by spacious, shady parkland with an outdoor swimming-pool". There's a fabulous picture at http://www.minotel.com/minotelPublic...otelCode=CH296 of a building in the middle of a vineyard with a straight view to the Lake but I don't know if that's the hotel or not (the photo is labelled "region.&quot

"Hostellerie de Caux" in Caux. Looks like the only way to that place is via funicular....would it be a better place to stay than Chexbres?

There is also the Hotel Prealpina which is also in Chexbres, but is quite a bit more expensive...

Oh, wait. I think that the "Hotel des Negociants which is in Vevey has a vacancy. No lake view though. Hmm.

During these two days, if I had to guess, we'd spend 1 day in Montreux and 1 day in Vevey. No heavy sightseeing, just enjoying being along the lake, and perhaps taking in some jazz apparently! Help?

Hi LSUvetgirl,

Hmmm. Chexbres is one of my favorite spots, so congratulations on finding it!

Chexbres is about 20 minutes on foot from the lake, but the walk is through a lovely vineyard trails. Your views will be panoramic over the vineyards and the lake.

If you'd like a neat village experience, consider Cully instead of Chexbres, as Cully is right on the water.

I've spent many vacations in Montreux, and I'd rather go there than to the BO. So -- of course I'm going to tell you that it's definitely worth an extra day! Here are links to some ideas of what to do there. Some of the photos in the "Lavaux" part below are from Chexbres.

ps, I think the station you want is "Chexbres-village."

Hi again,

I just saw your latest post --

I just want to also suggest the village of Glion, above Montreux. Stupendous panoramic views. But it's much, much closer to Montreux than Chexbres is -- a simple funicular or train ride. There are some three-star and two-star hotels in Glion.

Thanks for the links and input!

Unfortunately it doesn't look like I can get anything in Glion for that period. If I tell you what options are available and in my price range will you help me with some pros/cons of the area and/or hotel, given the cost? (Cost is for 2 nights, except for cecil where it's for 3 nights)

Chexbres - Hotel Prealpina (http://www.prealpina.ch - warning: annoying music)
- 453,20 CHF

Chexbres - Hotel Cecil (http://www.minotel.com/minotelPublic...otelCode=CH296)
- 330 CHF (1 free night also!)

Corsier-sur-Vevey - Hotel de la Place (http://www.hotels-suisse.ch/hotel-de...e-la-place.htm)
- 280 CHF

Vevey - Hotel Des Negociants (http://www.hotelnegociants.ch/english/index.htm)
- 341,20 CHF

Caux - Hostellerie de Caux (http://www.hostellerie-caux.com/)
- 340,00 CHF

Cully - Hotel au Major Davel (http://www.hotelaumajordavel.ch/?SOURCE=HOTEL)
- 360,00 CHF

My favorites are the Hotel Cecil (Chexbres) or the Hotel au Major Davel (Cully), maybe the Hostellerie de Caux, or the Hotel des Negociants (Vevey) for sheer convenience although it doesn't look like what i had envisioned for us.

Anyway, it's only a couple of days. I wouldn't want to base in such a quiet remote place for a week, but it seems like for 2 nights it might be fun and relaxing. But if it's really worth being in Vevey proper then I will jump on the one hotel that apparently still has a room.

Input much much appreciated!

Carrie

It doesn't sound like your dream hotel, but for me, I would pick the one in Vevey. I have not stayed there but know it's location. You will have plenty of things to see and do very very conveniently. Of all the towns, Vevey is my personal favorite BTW.

Don't let my post influence you, I'm just not one to like staying out in the countryside. I prefer to be near the lakes, shops, restaurants, etc.

I'm starting to lean that way. I love to get away from the hustle and bustle, but we'll be spending the rest of the week in Wengen. Maybe a little more "citiness" wouldn't be too bad for the Lake part of the trip.

Coupled with the fact that it's starting to look like I will have to have knee surgery sometime between now and then, I guess a flat city might be a safer bet? Talk about great timing...

Hi again,

Yes, the Negociants is the favorite of a friend of mine, and others who post here have also recommended it.

But. Having said that -- I'd go with the au Major Davel in Cully. Lakeside. Lakeside. Lakeside. The last time I was on the lake, I took a ferry cruise (of course!), and as we swept past Cully it was so charming that I told myself I'd have to stay there one day!

So the choice, for me, would be between Vevey & Cully. Can't go wrong!

Vevey, at least in the central part near the train station, that hotel, and the lake, doesn't feel very "city" to me, more like a village imo.

OK, right now I've reserved a room at des Negociants for 2 nights. Of course I may change my mind. Thanks everyone for the input!

As I mentioned on another thread, I now realize I have 1 free night at the end of our itinerary. Still contemplating a stay at the place in Cully for that.....
