Message: I was there about 10 years ago. Definitely the location is excellent. The view from the room was unique, with Notre Dame in front , and at night the church illuminated. Jullien le Pauvre also very nice, as well as all the streets around the hotel. Nearby there was a small restaurant, La Parchmenerie, located at a street with the same name. Very good and reasonable price, with prix fixe menus. Another thing were the rooms and bathrooms. Luck.
The Esmeralda was well located with great views, as mentioned above. My friend and I stayed there at the hotel annex for 6 nights, then the hotel main section for 3 nights. The annex was a much bigger room and we felt like we were living in a Paris apartment of centuries ago (as it dated back to the 1600s or even earlier). We were given our own front door key. However, the rooms themselves were very dusty (god knows what the cleaner, who wanted a tip every day, did besides making the beds!) and the furniture was ancient. My friend lived in fear of the heavy old light fitting dangling over the head of her bed falling on her during the night. There was also a door that had a wall behind it. In the hotel proper for our second stay I brushed against a light fitting on the wall and it fell down and smashed to bits. However, my friend and I agreed we would stay there again. Unless you're allergic to dust and need all mod cons, it is a good basic hotel.

I, too, stayed at the Esmeralda about ten years ago and never stayed there again. Yes, the location was great ( so are many others) , but the place was dusty and dreary and unlike every other place I have stayed in Paris, the concierge was extremely unhelpful, and my French is pretty good.

In short, you could do a lot better for the same price. There are many Paris
experts on the this forum and lots of information on reasonable hotels. Do a search. It will be worth it.

few years back I stayed in Le NotreDame Hotel, which is a bit more expensive, but clean, and with great view of NotreDame. I also was considering Esmeralda, but was told that at one time it had it charm, but since then it was going down hill. Since both hotels are very close to each other I did pass by it, and was re-enforced with my good choice. I think that it is too bad that owners of Esmeralda, just stopped caring.
