Krakow to Prague by night train

Krakow to Prague by night train, how safe it is for a solo female traveller?

I am considering to get a 1 bed compartment or 2 beds compartment in a night train. I would just like to know how safe it is to be in a 2 beds compartment in a night train. I have heard a lot of robbery cases but also 1 or 2 saying it is completely fine for a single female traveller to be in a 2 or 2 beds compartment night train.

Would like to gather some comments before i book my ticket.

Perfectly safe, in either a couchette (simple flat bunks with rug and pillow, 4 or 6 per compartment), or, much better, in a 1, 2 or 3 bed sleeper with washbasin.

You can book a sole-occupancy sleeper if you like, but it's much cheaper to share a 2 or 3 berth one. Whereas couchettes are mixed-sex, sleepers are single-sex unless you book all the berths in the compartment.

In the sleeper, the doors lock securely and there's a sleeper attendant on duty.

You can buy cheap tickets for this train if you start at the Czech end, at www.cd.cz/eshop from around €49 with a bed in a 2-bed sleeper.

Oh, and here are photos of what the sleepers on this train actually look like: http://www.seat61.com/Poland.htm#On_..._sleeper_train

Yes and that is why the Sleeping Car (vs Couchette cars) are much more secure - the attendant monitors who is coming and going at every stop - and yes the doors lock securely but in a shared compartment I have found that others sometimes will not lock the compartment when returning - especially in couchette compartments that also have doors that lock from the inside.

So a place in the Sleeping Car should be very secure for anyone.

For lots of great info on European trains and night trains check out not only Man in Seat 61's commercial site which he mentions above - www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.

Ok!

So, Berth means bed right ?

Sleepers Car is only for 1, 2 and 3 beds compartment and it is single sex right?

If it is secure, then I probably will go for 2 beds compartment because it is half the price of 1 bed comparment. I don't mind sharing, I am just afraid of robbery cases since there are so many negative comments about it for the past years.

Also, the website www.cd.cz/eshop kept telling it is impossible for me to buy a ticket from krakow to praha. Did i press the right thing or it is just simply not possible? Sorry ! Please enlighten me.

I don't believe the Czech train site allows international tickets sales. Why don't you buy your ticket from the Polish site or wait until you get to Krakow and buy the ticket.

A friend and I took this train this summer. If you are concerned about safety, you might consider getting the sleeper car for 1. We had a sleeper car for 2 and felt perfectly safe. I am a light slleper but I slept like a baby (eye mask + Dramamine = zzzzzz).

We had no flexibility in our schedule so we bought tickets in advance on Polrail rather than waiting until we arrived in Krakow. Polrail is a private site, I believe. They can and will answer any questions you have.

I loved Krakow and Prague! I hope you have a great trip!

Krakow to Prague by night train, how safe it is for a solo female traveller?</i>

I rode this night train seven years ago. I'm a geezer and found it as safe as any day train. While you may be assigned to a mixed gender compartment if you travel by couchette, you can ask the conductor for permission to change compartments if you are uncomfortable. Ask before you pull the sheets down or that bed (bunk, berth, slab) is yours. I traveled on many night trains. This was the oldest at the time but it was comfortable. If you end up with mates in your compartment speak with them about locking up. NEVER leave your valuables unattended.

For an illustrated introduction to night trains see http://tinyurl.com/y57vft.

Where you really have to be careful is in the train stations, Prague especially. Do not open your wallet or purse for anybody. Keep valuables on your body. There is basically no violent crime but there are pickpockets, as there are in touristy places throughout Europe.

I have taken literally zillions of overnight train rides in multi-person unisex compartments and have never ever heard of any problems for women - not a concern any more than on the street - less likely to happen here.

I booked the double sleeper on line with the czec train site. I could only do it one month prior and i had to register as a used. The train was great, as reported above, lockable doors and a conductor/attendant for each car.

mattian, I still haven't gone through my photos from my trip this summer, but I have posted a few of our sleeper car on the Krakow-Prague train we took. Tight quarters but comfortable and I slept well (thank you, Dramamine and eye mask).
