Krakow help
Anyone have suggestions for the most economical way to get from the US (Texas)to Krakow in October? Would be willing to fly to a gateway and train if that works best. Need to be there 5 October, returning on 9 October. Thanks!

You can get to Frankfurt (FRA) on United or Lufthansa from either Houston or Dallas for about $660 (includes all taxes/fees). This is the cheapest and also happens to be non-stop. If you can then somehow get from Frankfurt (FRA) to Frankfurt (HHN), then Ryanair can get you the rest of the way to Krakow.
Maybe someone else here can suggest a cheap train from Frankfurt to Krakow (but it won't be quick).
Good luck and book soon. Airfare prices really start climbing two months out!

I went to Krakow last month, and just compared various air fares. I do value my time, so would never add on a day or so to take a train there from some far-away city just to save $100 or whatever. I found an air fare that really wasn't much different that the basic RT flight to a major European portal. I flew KLM from the US to Krakow, which involved really going to AMS, of course, and then changing planes to a LOT/KLM codeshare. I think there were comparable fares on Air France, just going through Paris instead, and probably BA going through London.

I flew AA to Krakow a few years ago but required a stop in London. With the recent events and hassles with UK to/from/through travel I'd take bardo1's suggestion and take Lufthansa to FRA and on into Krakow.
It's a great place and you will enjoy your stay. Rich with history, food and not so mainstream...yet

tmh,
I had looked at just staying with Lufthansa from Texas and connecting in FRA on through to Krakow. It's $960 which may be the way to go (I just didn't know Seamus' top budget).
What with the cost and time, transfering to the other Franfurt airport and then taking Ryanair (which should be less than $300 RT (but who know how much less) it may not be worth the hassle.
If Seamus can budget it, staying on through with Lufthansa to Krakow is certainly less painful.

Thanks, all. Origin is SAT, preferred carrier is CO or one of its partners, which include NWA, KLM and Air France, but cost will be decidign factor. This is not for myself, but a college student attending a conference. Will check out the KLM possibility - additional suggestions always welcome.

I don't know of any external sources (although maybe this person could check the national organization that is sponsoring the conference) but at my college we had internal grants to allow students to travel to conferences to present posters or papers.
