King Ludwig's Castle from Innsbruck or Salzburg
Does anyone know the best way to get to this castle from Innsbruck or Salzburg. Is it worth staying overnight in the town or a day trip?

Fussen is near the castle. Innsbruk is the closest by far. Click on www.mappy.fr and select fussen and for the country select Algemagne (sp?). On the map, back it out to the region, until you can see Innsbruk. With the map you can see Munich and this is two hours closer to Salzburg.

Neuschwanstein (New Swanstone) castle was never finished and thus the tour is not "complete". Ludwig (an excellent swimmer) died by drowning (before it was completed in the 1800's) while being supervised under quasi-house arrest. It's a long, steep hike up to the castle although you can pay to go up in a horse-drawn carriage. There are many, many tourists visiting during the high season and you may have to wait an extended period of time to get an English-spoken tour. While this castle has been made quite famous by the Disney parks, the castle, itself, is overrated for it's tourist value.
Many people who have visited would probably tell you they wouldn't go back.
Consider spending an afternoon walking around Oberammergau (home of the Passion Play) which is nearby.
Garmisch, about an hour drive away, is a stereo-typical Alpine village and considered by the Germans to be a tourist trap but it's a must see/stay if only due to it's proximity to the highest peak in Germany and its associated scenery.

IMO the outside of Neuschwanstein is far better than the inside. If you could hack it a better option might be to visit Herrenchiemsee, the largest of all the Ludwig "builds" with about 200 rooms. The decorations are more extensive and luxurious than any of the other three to include the wonderful Linderhof and the Hall of Mirrors is even larger than its namesake at Versailles.
It is a major attraction for German tourists but not nearly as well-known in the US.

IMHO Neuschwanstein is the least interesting of Mad Ludwig's many Castles. I like Linderhof best.
Don;t know how you're traveling or how many of you there are. The castles are most easily reaches by car - but do check the web sites on tour times - many are not in English and you need to time your arrival - unless you can do the tours in another language.

Linderhof was also my favorite especially since the interior is finished. Next would be Herrenchiemsee as it sits in the middle of a lovely island. Neuschwanstein sits atop a very high hill and is not a finished castle. It is truly beautiful from the outside (Cinderella's castle at Disney World is modelled after it)
You can probably do the castle as a day trip from Innsbruck.
