Depends on what you're expecting. It's a barren volcanic rock, not much else. There are a couple of small coves where the boat can take you to experience the water that's been warmed by the volcano below, and perhaps a mudbath. Other than that, there's not much else to see or do. The excursion also goes to Therassia, doesn't it? There's a village at the top of the cliff, but to get there is a stiff climb, and by the time you get there it's time to get back to the boat so you won't miss its departure. Not a lot of time for exploration.

I'm pretty sure it's under 5km, but there's a current sometimes and sometimes a high wind. You'll have to be careful. And truthfully, I'm not sure you can rent anything to do that. What you could do is hire a boat to take you out there without having to take the whole excursion. I've always stayed in Oia, and I know that Markos Karvounis at Karvounis tours has arranged a private boat for people before. If you stay there you could talk to him, but if you stay in Fira you could find someone at a travel agency there to help you. A travel agent would also know if there are canoes available to rent. Good Luck, sounds like fun.

We did this trip on a glass bottomed boat in 2002. A little bus picked us up at our hotel in Perissia and dropped us off at the port, got on the boat then we stopped at Fira's port to pick up more people. First we went swimming in the hot springs (although they weren't too hot) then we went on to Nea Kameni where you can hike to the top of the active volcano. Our last stop was Thirassia, we ate lunch at a seaside restaurant then had a nap on one of the docks we didn't try to make it to the top of town. The boat then went to this reef so we could see the fish and colors. Oia was our next stop where got off the boat and rode the donkeys up to town then on to Esperas our new hotel.
Our day didn't feel rushed and we enjoyed it. I think the best part is just seeing Santorini from the water it allows you appriciate how beautiful and unique the island is.
