Just returned from 10 wonderful days in Prague ...
Going to Prague in the off-season when there aren't any crowds is the best way to do it economically. The weather was cool, in the 40s, but the price was right. From Boston, my roundtrip flight cost $389, the 4 star hotel that I stayed at in Mala Strana on Na Kampa Island cost a total of $294 for 9 nights, including a buffet breakfast (it costs $150/night during high season). The House at the Charles Bridge is the nicest hotel that I have stayed at in Europe -- the staff is friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. The room was incredibly large and well-decorated with a king-sized bed, table and chairs, television, sofa and refrigerator. The bathroom had both a very deep tub and hand shower. My room faced the river and I had a very nice, unobstructed view of the Charles Bridge and Old Town. The hotel was one of the locations in the first "Mission Impossible" movie. It was remodeled in the 1990s and was originally built as a brewery in 1570.

Food in Prague is very inexpensive, and a bottle of beer in a supermarket costs 25 cents at the most - $1 in a restaurant or pub.

Anyway, had a wonderful vacation, and I'm glad to be home. Have just started the beginning stages in planning my next trip to Budapest and Vienna for March 2002.

Fodorites, thanks for helping me plan my trip to Prague. Your contributions were invaluable. I have written a very lengthy travelogue that I have decided not to post on the Fodor's Board, however, I will be happy to forward it to anyone that emails me.

Leslie

Leslie, I would love to receive a copy of your travelog. I was there with friends the first week in November and was enchanted. It would be fun to hear what you did for 10 days, though I'm sure it was not difficult to find things to keep you busy. Already I am wishing I had shopped more. Things are so reasonably priced.

If you thought Prague was cool and cheap, wait until you see Budapest!! You must try the Hungarian Goulash (bread on the side) with a big ole beer!
It'll cost about $2.50. I'm looking at my framed poster of old town Prague now, oh I hope I can return one day.

Because of the length of my Prague Travelogue, I have not posted it here at Fodors. However, over 100 of you have asked me to email it to you. I appreciate your interest, and I have enjoyed the thank you notes that were emailed to me after you read it. js, if you would like a copy, please send me your email address -- the one you have posted here at Fodors is invalid.

If anyone else would like a copy, my email address is [email protected]

Leslie

Hi Leslie. I'm single woman going to Prague at the end of Feb. I'm wondering if you had any problems with being ripped off by taxi drivers or being over charged in restaurants. Everything I read about Prague indicates that one has to use extra caution when dealing with restaurants and taxis. I would greatly appreciate any advice that you may have. Thanks.

Lauren, thanks for the kudos. If anyone else wants my travelogue, please email me. I'm really surprised at how many people are interested in going to Prague -- over 300 of you have asked for my travelogue. I'm really in awe. Thanks to all of you that have requested it that sent me such nice thank you notes. They were a pleasure to read.

Prunes, to answer a few of your questions -- I am a single woman and had absolutely no problem in Prague. Regarding restaurants, I went to many and found no problem going into them alone, however, most often I had dinner at 5 or 6pm, sometimes a bit later. Also, I tried to sit by the window if possible, it was good for people watching. Don't worry about the size of the tables, many are just for 1 or 2 people. Regarding cabs, I only took 2, and that was just roundtrip from the airport to the hotel. But, if you're going to take a cab, you need to negotiate the fare in advance. Public transportation was very easy to use. Email me if you want a copy of my travelogue.

Regards,

Leslie
