Just back from Malta and Gozo - Hotel report...
We are just back from 2 weeks in sunny Malta.
My comments on some restaurants and sights are in the Rant and Rave section.
However here are some particular comments on hotels which proved to be disappointing..
Hilton Malta : brand new, gorgeous place, marble everywhere, but very noisy hotel : tiled floor in the rooms - I love the sound of high heel shoes at one in the morning..., room's door lets all the sounds from the corridor inside the room... noisy children, people talking late at night, etc...
On top of that, walls between rooms are thin like paper...
Westin Diagonara: another nice-looking hotel, a bit older, would deserve some refurbishing.
Again room's door problems (too thin!!!). It was "great" to hear our Australian (Just an example) neighbours waking up at 6.30 AM, slamming their doors and chatting in the corridor for a few minutes...
San Lawrenz resort on Gozo island (this one is posted in the Rant and Rave section) : similar noise problems...
To sum up, sound insulation is something they do not seem to care about in Malta...
Friends of us stayed at the St Georges Park hotel and experienced similar problems.

Joelle - Thanks for the trip report. Also read what you said in Rants and Raves.
We will be in Malta for a week at the beginning of June. Planned to stay at Castille Hotel in Valletta, but since rates came way down at the Meridian Phoenicia a couple of weeks ago, we switched to there. Did you happen to see the Meridian (at the city gates of Valletta)? Any thoughts?
Any other thoughts on sites? We plan to visit Gozo (day trip only) - would you say one? two? days of a week are good for Gozo. Also looking forward to anccient sites, Mdina, some nice walks, three cities, Valletta.
Did you get around by car? bus? We are planning to use the busses.

Howard,
We ate a quick lunch at the Meridien Phoenicia brasserie(quite OK). The hall is rather impressive (in the old style but nice), but I cannot advise about rooms. All I know is that they are rather small (standard rooms). I can tell you that this hotel does not have many balconies, just regular windows.
Its location is great though, just at the entrance of Valetta historical town and next to the bus central stations.
We used the buses a couple of times and had a lot of fun with them. Mind the brakes and the crazy driving...
We also hired a car part of our stay since it made us more independent.
Do not hesitate to ask me more questions.

I have been researching the hotels you mentioned. Do you have any ideas on where one might find a luxury, quieter hotel? Thanks for the trip report. I have been to Sicily & Greece, but not to Malta... trying to decide whether to to back to the others or try Malta. Any opinions on this? Thanks. WT

A very nice and exclusive place in Malta is the Xara Palace, located in Mdina (old city in the middle of the island), very nice place!
The hotel itself only has 17 rooms and is part of Relais et Chateaux. It is located in a lovely old mansion.
I only had dinner there (excellent), so I can't advise about the rooms. But they should comply with the general Relais and Chateaux specifications (i.e. luxury type).

We stayed at the Victoria Hotel in Sliema and I don't recall any noise problems and it was pretty nice. We spent 3 nights on Gozo and loved it! It's much quieter and more laid back than Malta and easier to drive around. We stayed at Ta'Cenc there and really liked it (it was very quiet!).

Yes Ta'Cenc is a great place.
I stayed there 10 years ago, tried to book there for May but their prices were rather expensive.
We went to have a look and it still looks great.
However 10 years have passed and it shows on the buildings (state of wall paintings, doors, etc...).
We also asked to visit one of their "trullos" (best rooms with separate lounge) and found the place a bit small and a bit worn out (unfortunately).
