Jungfraujoch: Is the hike to the Mönchsjochhütte open in May?
We are going to be in the Bernese Oberland area from 26-30 May. We know that the husky dogsled rides, snow disks, and some of the other activities are not open until 1 June, but we thought that we could still hike to the hut and see the ice palace. Can anyone confirm these options are available in May? The main jungfrau website seems to indicate everything else is open, but I wanted to be sure.
Would you recommend the trip to the Jungfrau in late May?

Hi see_the_world7,
Here's a quote from the Jungfraubahn site (www.jungfraubahn.ch):
"Walk from the railway station on Jungfraujoch (3454 m) up to the Jungfraufirn and hike east to the obere Mönchsjoch. From here it's only a few minutes along the trail to the Mönchsjoch Hut at 3650 metres altitude
The route is marked and prepared from April to October. However, good footwear and suitable clothing is essential - this is a high-Alpine region!"
So it looks like it'll be open in May!
Have fun!

Hi swandav. I saw that on the Jungfraujoch site, but when I was looking around for general info today on the web I came across someone's trip notes (not on here) that seemed to indicate it was not open. Unfortunately, I can't find it again now. I just wondered if anyone on fodors had actually done the walk in May.

From the website:
"Von der Bahnstation Jungfraujoch (3454m.ü.M) steigt man auf den Jungfraufirn und läuft über diesen, Richtung Osten, zum oberen Mönchsjoch. Von hier erreicht man in wenigen Minuten über die Wegspuren die Mönchsjochhütte auf 3650m.ü.M.
Von April bis Oktober ist der Weg markiert und in gutem Zustand, trotzdem versteht sich eine gute Ausrüstung von selbst, man bewegt sich im hochalpinen Raum!"
The way is marked from April to October---so it must be open in May.
Also, on this page:
http://www.jungfraubahn.ch/en/Deskto.../183_read-808/
Note that the Ice Palace and "plateau with hikes in eternal snow" are not listed as restricted to June to September.
Finally, if you go to the hut website, you'll see that they are open from the end of march to october:
