Julian Alps in October?
Slovenia Experts!
We want to go hiking/walking the second week of october where there is lots of greenery and pleasant trails--not too steep.
We love Wengen/murren, zermatt in switzerland. No driving needed. cows in the meadows..... But want to go somewhere else.
Is October a good time for hiking in slovenia? the julian alps? lake bled? triglav? or? suggestions are welcome!
we can hike up, but downhill is hard on the knees. so if not chairlifts, etc. we prefer not too steep.
thank you!

October is a bit late in the season for lots of greenery in the mountains, you will likely encounter some autumn foliage by then. The weather also won't be as cooperative as in the summer months, but you can still have a great time, just account for at least a rainy day or two during your trip.
Consider Lake Bled, as well as Lake Bohinj (already in the Triglav NP) with its cable car up to Mt Vogel, which offers fantastic views. You can hike around Lake Bohinj, too. Any hikes further up into the national park will become quite steep and thus harder on the knees, unless you were to set off from the Pokljuka Plateau, which is much higher up, but you would need to organise transport to get there as there is no public transport outside of the summer season.
You could also take the train from Bohinj to Most na Soci and then switch to a bus to Kobarid and Bovec in the Soca Valley, where there are many hiking options along the Soca River and up to various waterfalls, etc., all quite easy on the knees. I'm not sure if the cable car up to Mt Kanin operates in October, but if it does, it's an easy way to get very high up into the mountains.

One of the most idyllic places in Slovenia for traditional architecture, pleasant hikes, and cow-watching is Velika Planina, but October is just too late for a visit there; the cows typically head to the valleys in early September, and October is often marked by long periods of rain. The cable car may also not run (or run sporadically) out of season.
