Juan les pins as Riviera base?

Will be traveling by train. I have reservations at Le Grimaldi in Nice but my husband thinks he'd like a smaller town. What do you think of Juan Les Pins as base?

I thought it was very pretty, rich, lots and lots of boats, rather crowded - a little more chaotic than Nice or Cannes but maybe that's me. (the roads were smaller for one thing).

but I did like it very much.

I stayed in Juan Les Pins two years ago and didn't care for it much. Later I read in Conde Nast Traveler that is considered the poor cousin to Antibes. I did go over to Antibes and found it much more charming with a Picasso museum and historical buildings. It depends on what you are wanting to do, it does have a decent beach but that isn't really my interest when I am in Europe.

It's one of THE party places on the Cote d'Azur. Extremely loud and crowded July/Augst.
Antibes, Cap d'Antibes or Cap Ferrat would be my choice, but a car would be almost a must then.

Don't do Juan Les Pins unless you're a twenty-something dance club cutie who loves to get high, hang out and dance all night. On the other hand, Villefranche-sur-Mer is an absolutely charming, pretty and very small town 5 minutes from Nice by train, with a very convenient train station. I love Nice, but am seriously thinking of staying in the Hotel Welcome in Villefranche on my next trip.
