Rex:
I just returned from Italy too. Watched First and Business Class passengers board in Munich. They got to go first after all. One jewelry laden snooty looking woman, a bunch of teenagers with backpacks, several woman with screaming infants and a group of very drunk looking men in business suits. Must have been a lot of frequent flyer miles here. Frankly the passengers in economy looked like they had a lot more class. Granted they had bigger seats, more leg room and more expensive champagne. Certainly worth some extra bucks. But would you realy want to talk to someone who paid $6300 for the same flight that cost me $519?

Jessycat hello! I am happy you are back again. I was wondering where you were. I must have missed that you mentioned you would be away!
I am sure you had some nice pasta dishes and other nice things.... ;-)
Did it rain a lot? Because March here in Switzerland was the worst since 1850 or so! But now, well, spring seems to be not that far anymore.
Gerry,

Well, this is a first. I can't remember when someone on this forum ever said "Ewwww - - I wouldn't want to sit up there in business class because of the people!"

Anyhow, we'll have a pretty good-sized chunk of the territory, and I guess we can jus talk to ourselves, if necessary - - my "group" is my wife, her parents, one uncle and his wife. Virtually all of my "small group" travel has consisted of family or extended family or friends of family, any time I've ever done it.

From some people on this board, nothing I can say will get me a "bon voyage"!
Sorry Rex. I just could not resist. It sounds to me like you found a good deal.
I think my point may have been that very few people would ever realy pay that $6200 price unless they desperately needed that flight. They're either using frequent flyer miles or thier company is paying for it.
We flew Lufthanza from San Francisco. Couldn't have asked for a better/more comfortable flight. Except seats were bigger in Business class. But what I said was true. Some drunken businessmen kept comming back to harrass a young lady in front of us. They brought her champagne and hors d'oeuvres and generally made a nuisance of themselves. We had champagne in economy too! And they had more screaming babies up there. Would have liked the larger seats but would not have wanted to sit with that group.
Unlike some who might be happy your going to be off the board for awhile, I do hope you have a nice trip. And I'll miss your advise. Or will you be connected on you laptop?
Thanks for responding to my last e-mail.

Boun Viaggio,

Gerry

PS. This should be with your other post.

Anne, Gerry -- thanks to both of you.

While I may check in on occasion from Italy while gone, it will be via cybercafe. I have found it useful to carry a laptop - - but only for writing - - and uploading and downloading to floppy disk - - not connecting to the internet directly.

Cybercafes are so much easier and more convenient.
Wow -Thanks for all of the nice responses. Rex- you will only get lovely words of encouragement from me. Italy.. I went as a single, on my own woman and had a absolutely wonderful time. I feel empowered and very brave for going alone. My travel experience was 50% better than last time. ( went on a tour last time) Really! Alot of questions were answered for me and I got to do somethings I didn't get to do last time. I woke up late and stayed up late. I danced at an Italian night club, made many new friends, Spoke to many people that couldn't speak English well. My Italian improved..(people were grateful I could speak a little Italian) and it was very sunny and warm. Hurrah! I'm glad to hear from you too Ursula. I missed hearing from you. Now.. I am just trying to adapt to life here. Hmmm.. Jcat

Is this a better response??

PS. There was a great cybercafe around the corner from my hotel in Rome.

I stayed close to Via Veneto. In Barberini. Via delle Quatro Fontana. I could walk to the Fontana di Trevi in minutes. It was called the Anglo Americano. My room was very small( maybe because I was traveling single) but, the location was fabulous. The cafe was 24 hours and called something like the Net. It was very new a modern and played great music. It was grande! I'll look it up tonight and let you know the name. Great Cafe on the corner and the hotel was right by the metro. Jcat

Rex,

For your consideration. My wife and I stayed at the Domus Julia March19-29 (nine nights). Its right around the corner from Jessycat's hotel(one block down) on the via Rasella. Via Del Quatro Fontana is a very busy and noisy steet. Via Rasella on the other hand is reasonably quiet. Located directly behind the Presidential Palace(Quirinale). Its approximately 4 blocks from the Trevi and two blocks from Piazza Barbarini(the bottom of Via Veneto) and the Metro station(BEWARE OF PICKPOCKETS!!!!--I'll post on this later). Its a short walk to Trevi, Spanish steps, Via Veneto- not too far from the Pantheon. But it's a bit of a walk to the Campo del Fiore and Piazza Navona.
Check their website at domusjulia.it. What you see is what you get. Our room (301) was or looked exactly like the double room pictured on the web-site. The room next door(300) was the suite pictured. Rooms, recently remodeled, were spotless and actually looked better than the pictures. Good size bathrooms. Cost of our room was 220,000 lire per night (rate discounted due to the length of our stay). Very reasonable. "Breakfast" served in room was 15000 lire per person extra. Forget about it! There are at least 3 bars within 1 1/2 blocks where you can get anything you want for much less. Bring instant coffee if you need it to get out of the room.
Hotel is very private. Only 4 rooms and an entry common room per floor. You can book an entire floor(appartment)with 6-8 people. This would seem ideal for your group. Contact person is Rosa (manager/owner?). There are many other good hotels in this area-some fancier-but I doubt more private. You may use my name if you wish.

Have Fun,

Gerry
Gerald Haran

Didn't mean to ignore you Jessycat. It's your post after all! We had a ball too. What did you like best? It took me 4 days to get over the jet lag comming home. I think I'm better now. But I needed to catch up on lost sleep.

Hello,
Butting in with apologies, I am a solo traveller going to Rome (first time) and staying at the Intercontinental de la Ville (Spanish Steps). Your advice on which train into town from FCO and which stop is closest to this hotel, please. Are there taxis waiting at the station in town and what identifies them? I have faxed the hotel, no answer. Appreciate anyones help and welcome home.
Barbara

Good Morning Jessycat!
I do hope that the adaption to the real and tough life we all have is not too difficult. I am with you, because Italy, well, I lived there for some time (in Florence) and I can figure out what kind of change it must be for you to be back home. But, we still love our homes, don't we?
