It's the middle of winter in Switzerland

Last night brought tons of snow to Switzerland. The plows have been out and we needed to use our snow blower to clear our driveway.

Luckily, snow isn't really a problem for Switzerland unless:

- you have no winter tires
- no experience driving in snow
- plan on going over passes
- don't adhere to the speed limit
- are a tailgater

We've had power outages in my area the whole morning but things seem to be working again.

In the lower elevations, the snow should be gone by the weekend. In the mountain areas, the snow may stay till April. Or maybe not. I'll have to ask our "Wetter Frosch". We have one living in our town.

Hi Schuler, isn't it beautiful though! I went to the dentist this morning here in Lausanne and had to walk down a street that has a view over Lac Léman of the mountains above Evian and it was stunning. I was shocked at the deep snow on the cars driving through the city.

Hi Beaupeep,

Snow is Lausanne? In October? Just proves anything can happen here.

Enjoy the day!

It sounds so beautiful but cold!! Hope you are all wrapped up.

We had a week in Switzerland (Basel, Luzern and Lauterbrunnen) a few weeks ago and you have such a gorgeous country. Stunning scenery! We would love to go back and explore more.

It's not only in Switzerland lots of snow in the UK too. And terrible flodding in Ottery St Mary, Devon, due to a hail storm.
Some good snow photos on the BBC site!
Here in Holland it is just cold and misty, I had to scrape the car windscreen for the first time yesterday, and again this morning.

Hey, make sure you get it all plowed away by the time I come over next April, OK? (LOL)

Last time I was over we once again took the Glacier Express (sorry, Pal, but I still love it) out of Brig...Brig was clear and dry..we got up into The Goms and it was like moving into another world..snow everywhere and looking GREAT..absoluetly wonderful IMO...enjoy that stuff.

No, not down here but just up above us a little which is where the commuters come down from. And on the mountains across the lake. But we have had snow in Lausanne in October in the past although it melts the same day.

I'd rather have snow than all this rain we are getting today.

Won't last, the Föhn will take care of it by the weekend if not sooner. Headed for another Green Xmas?

Bird:

Not bad, not bad. I'd rather have a Maienfelder Barrique though.

Dali:

The föhn. It gives me a headache just thinking about it.

Never mind. I'll be in Schruns sitting stark naked in a mixed-gender sauna. Heck, I'll even strike a conversation with the naked gentleman next to me. A sign of a true European.

Will be flying into Zurich in three weeks, and will head for Germany, Amsterdam, and then on to Lausanne in early December. We've had some really nice sunny days in Lausanne this time of year, but we've also had cold rain, snow, wind... (makes me think of home in west central Illinois). Our friend in Zurich says that we always bring the bad weather with us!! haha... looks like it has preceeded us this year.

So looking forward to another 2 1/2 weeks in Switzerland, Germany, and Amsterdam! I'll make sure to pack some extra heavy sweaters this year.

schuler - I'd never tried Swiss wine until last year. A pleasant, costly surprise. You wouldn't by chance have connections would you?

Well, that tumultuous cold weather came blasting into the Mediterranean today -- where it met a warm front and it's been a great dramatic clash and flash and high surf all day.

It was fun, but I'm hoping it's not the beginning of winter.

Oh I don't wanna hear it!! For one, I'm jealous of anyone who lives in Switzerland. Secondly, I live in the land of eternal sunshine where we never get snow. Now I'm sad.

OK, I've had a good cry and I'm over it now. Enjoy your snow, and if you get a chance, please post pics so we can enjoy it vicariously.
