Planning a trip to Italy next year. Flying into Rome? Looking for experiences from the wine country. Hotels, vineyards, restaurants, anything of interest. Also driving experinces, good or bad.

When you say "wine country" do you mean Tuscany?

If so, why not fly into Pisa or Florence?

Tuscany would be our primary interest. Our flight is into Rome, we have business there for three days, and want to then travel.

Wine country? Do you mean Franciacorta, Oltrepò pavese, Castelli romani, Marche, Sudtiröl, Colli euganei, Sicily or what?

The Banfi Estate is in Montalcino. Montalcino is SW of Siena, you'll have to drive up twisty mountain roads - but completely worth it! Banfi's flagship is a killer Brunello - they offer a luncheon (the best $42 you'll ever spend) for like 7 courses with wine for each in a beautiful castle. Extra careful on the twisty mountain roads after that!! Lots of other small wineries around that area, such as Antica Poggia offer tours, tastings and of course shops. Don't neglect the olive oil for sale, either!

Much of Italy is wine country. I suggest you set your parameters of when, how long, how much, and transport mode first before you shotgun hotels and wineries.

thanks for your imput, lunch at Banfi sounds outstanding. Bob thanks for pointing out that most of Italy is wine country.. I am not sure what region I want to visit, how much time I will spend, the only certain plans I have is Rome for business, three days, April, May or June of 04. Simply looking for compelling stories.
