Italy: Which Spa Resorts are the Best Value?

Hi. I'm looking to go to Italy early September of this year.

Who has gone to any of the spa resorts in Italy and of those you've gone to, which would you consider very good quality and has the best value overall?...Not looking to pay $800 nightly.

Thanks,
Victoria!

What kind of spa resort are you looking for? Those where you drink all kind of waters or those where you are in baths, pools and the like?

Baldrick, I"m looking for spas where there are just normal massages, facials and whatever is typical of Italy's spas. I'm not looking to have a strict diet. Would actually like to be able to have an apple martini in the evening in the evening too. Wouldn't want the place in a totally remote area.

As you'll find once you start looking into the various spas in Italy, Victoria, many of them have a somewhat more medical point of view. They're used by Italians and also often by Germans. Various spas specialize in things like "bronchopneumopathy" or "diseases of the kidneys" or whatever. So unless you were looking forward to "insufflation of the Eustachian tubes" you won't be going that route.

But there are spas that are more along the general wellness/fitness/relaxation model. One that I've considered (but not actually been to---my travel plans changed and I went to France instead) is located in Sirmione (so convenient to Milan and the Malpensa airport), right on Lake Garda. The web site is:

http://www.termedisirmione.com/

The "wellness" spa is Aquaria (and it looks very nice indeed). You can often book package deals with the hotels that include lodging along with treatments. There are lots of different options listed on this web site, some in English but some only in Italian. If you email them they'll be able to answer your queries.

If you have trouble navigating the site post here and I'll show you where to find the appropriate info.

thanks, Theresa and everyone else for the information thus far.

Theresa I did check out their website, but it does appear a bit confusing to me.

how did you hear about their spa? Are there any in particular that you have been to in Italy that you could suggest?

I've never stayed at a spa in Italy, but have stayed at spas in France. Italian spas are generally described as thermal spas ("terme" pronounced "TARE-may&quot that use water from hot springs. France has both thermal and sea water spas (the latter known as "thalassotherapy&quot.

I found Aquaria because I was specifically looking for someplace convenient to Milan, as I traveling to the area for work and had planned to tack on a week's holiday to the business trip. But my plans changed, so I didn't go.

An Italian friend also recommends Saturnia. This link should take you to a page that shows representative prices for the most general program, "remise en forme" (that the Italians use the French term for this reflects the fact that the French have been offering these kinds of services for a long time now):

http://www.termedisaturnia.it/asp/we...po=1&idut=

So if you were to go in September (the "gold season" for purposes of pricing) you could get a week's lodging (this may be six nights---I'd have to look around a bit to figure it out) and three meals a day ("full board&quot, and six days worth of "remise en forme" relaxation and fitness services for 1,676 euro as single, 1,326 euro per person as a double. Spas typically offer a reduction if your partner doesn't want to do the spa stuff.

You can also do a weekend package or shorter stay during the week.

French spas typically schedule all your treatments within a half day period, alternating morning and afternoon so that you can do a bit of touring (including outings arranged by the resort which may be free or involve a small charge). You can also add on services like manicures or pedicures or extra massages a la carte.

Aquaria will be less expensive than Saturnia (which is considered pretty posh, despite the prices being much less than what you'd pay in the U.S.), depending on which hotel you choose. All three listed on the web site look very nice.

Therese, thank you very much for your suggestions/advice. If you had time, you can start your own business scheduling trips for business specific to spas in Europe. You seem very up-to-date and thorough. As a business owner myself, I respect that.

I hope to meet interesting women (like yourself) and hopefully a good man for a change for myself.
