I can speak to Capri and Pompeii - we were there the third week of February/99 (which was unseasonably cold due to La Nina). Despite seeing a few flurries of snow (!) it was mostly in the high 40s/low 50s with two days in the mid 60s. While it was overcast and drizzled abit the day we went to Pompeii - it didn't matter. The ruins don't need great weather to be enjoyed.

Have a lovely holiday.

I was in Italy, Feb.'94, and it was extremely cold. I brough a winter coat but was quite shocked. I was in Venice and ROme. I expected Venice to be pretty cold, especially with the water, but Rome, was brutal. I was told it was a cold snap. But it never got past 40, 42 degrees the whole week I was there. Be prepared.

Cold and damp is the norm...was in Sicily several years ago in January and it POURED the entire time ( do want to return...fascinating place). The torrential rain was unusual, but some rain is normal. Rome that time of year was sunny and cold. Be prepared. The big plus is: in the winter you have the place to yourself.

Thank you all for your feedbacks. We just decided to postpone our Italy tip to next year. FYI - the one that finalize our decision is the fact that almost all museums/attractions are opened only up to 1:00 or 1:30. We don't look forward to staying outdoor the rest of PM/night!

We just returned from Venice & Tuscany (mid Oct.). All I can say is brrrr. Venice was overcast and cool. We were expecting 60-70. Tuscany -- RAIN. It was much like San Francisco winter. I know, but it felt cold to me maybe it was the dampness.
We rented a house thinking what a perfect time to do laundry...but no dryer. We had to dry everything on the radiators. To say nothing of having to call the realtor to come out and turn on the heat at extra cost.
