I guess I've been very fortunate because with 4 trips to Italy, I haven't had too much friction. Even when I did, it didn't have the slightest effect on my enjoyment or memories of the trip.
However, carfree, don't be too sure about Hawaii being less friction-filled. One of the guys I work with took his family of 4 for a week on Maui (not their 1st trip there). They were only there 2 days when the double whammy hurricane required them to change their return flight. Ended up being a very expensive 4 day "vacation". Major bummer.

Thanks for writing a TR, carfree.
My DH and I had a real love affair with Italy but we always said that She wasn't, unlike the stereotypical info we started out with, as easy as France. We expected Parisians to be rude and Romans to be welcoming--and it was the exact opposite for us. Until DH gave his charming smile and ordered 2 "biscuits" to Rome at the train station.

I finally got around to figuring out how to post pictures. This one shows what I meant by the sky being opalescent blue.

So enjoyed reading your warts and all TR. I thing the posters criticizing your report have either been extraordinarily lucky or are in denial/dementia.
Thank you for a witty well-written trip in every sense of the word!

"At least most in Rome used real candles. Lighting a bulb just isn't the same. What's next? A light-the-candle app?"
I was ahead of the curve. The "light-the-candle" app for memorials is here. Reality is gradually becoming an unnecessary expense and hassle.

Hi carfree - your recent thread about the pros and cons of organised tours sent me here again, and I've enjoyed reading it again, and all the comments whether favourable or not. So thank you again for taking the trouble to write it.
Did you ever do a TR of the organised tour?
