Italy to Switzerland?

Can anybody advise the best way (on public transport) to get from Rome to Geneva. I would have been happy to catch a train to Milan and hire a car and drive over and then leave car at Zurich but have been advised that one way car rentals are very expensive in Europe - can anybody help? Has anybody else found that one way car hire is a little too expensive?

By rail, you can change in Milan and take a direct train to Geneva..depending on timing, either a regular EuroCity train or a high(er) speed Cisalpino.

I assume you realize that you can fly this route on EasyJet from Rome?

Here's just one timing possibility:

Roma Termini dep 07:30 ES 9428 EuroStar Italia
Milano Centrale arr 12:00
Milano Centrale dep 12:25 EC 124
Geneve arr 16:50
Duration: 9:20; runs daily

Hi C,

There is also a night train.

See www.trenitalia.com/en for schedules.

You can't buy the ticket online.

You can't buy the international part of the ticket from the Italian site, but you can buy the ticket on line - at the Rail Europe site.

A quick check finds the price is $124.00 each way. Alitalia is $204.00 round trip. Forget the long train ride that's more expensive, fly.

Hi all - thanks for the tip. Being an Aussie I was wondering what airlines might fly within that area.

So I will check out Easyjet - I agree that flying would be best but my searches seemed to turn up horrendously expensive fares!

Looks like Easyjet could be the answer.
Thanks
C
