I'll be studying in Rome for 2 1/2 months(Feb-April) and i'm wondering how much money i will need to ride take a train to Freiburg, Germany(ticket cost and reservation)

There's no set price, it depends on when you're traveling. Check trenitalia.com for pricing on your travel date.

It would be on a weekend sometime between February and April. I don't know how far the Italian trains go from Rome, so i don't know what to put in as my destination.

If you're going to Freiburg then that's your destination. You don't change trains at the border and you don't know that it's going to be an Italian train. The train's nationality is irrelevant.

Worrying about that is like worrying about how far outside Germany Lufthansa will fly or how far outside Italy Alitalia will fly.

If you don't know when you're going then you'll pay the highest last minute fares so just check current fares.

You will have to change trains at Milano C and Basel SBB.
The Trenitalia website shows for the random date of February 27th a standard fare for Rome dp 8.00 - Basel ar 15.29 of 176 EUR and a reduced smart web fare of 108 EUR.
You can get cheaper web fares if you book the Rome - Milan leg and the Milan - Basel leg separately:

Adrienne, you won't find any trains to Freiburg on the Trenitalia site. On the German rail site (www.bahn.de ), you'll find timetables but no prices, because the trip crosses three different countries. Rather than sneering at the question, it would have been better to try to give some helpful advice.

Necker's advice needed no addition, so any advice of mine would have been superfluous. I reproved you, rather than sneering at you. I really hate to see people putting on superior airs when someone asks for help. I don't know what part of your advice you consider helpful, as there were two major flaws in your advice.

You directed Poissonrouge to the trenitalia site, which doesn't have information about connections outside of Italy. Not helpful. If you enter Freiburg, it will tell you there's no such place. You then implied that his concern about the nationality of the trains was ridiculous, which certainly sounded like sneering to me. In fact, it *does* matter the nationality of the train, because none of the national railway web sites shows prices for trips that involve the trains of more than one nation. To find the prices, you need to piece together the trip using multiple national rail sites, as explained in detail by Necker.

Of the above posted offers, I'd take either the eurocity to Basel, then (with an extra ticket) the ICE from Basel to Freiburg (45min), or the night train to Munich and from there to Freiburg (not a very good train connection though, longer distance than Basel-Freiburg)
