Italy or Greece Honeymoon?

My fiance and I are trying to decide between Italy and Greece for our honeymoon. Unfortunately, we only have time for a six night stay in either country. Our trip would ideally include sightseeing, food & wine, and I wouldn't mind a little beach time. Thoughts?

What month?

Considering your home airport, where can you fly direct (if possible) or with the best connection? If I were taking a short trip, flight options would determine the destination or certainly narrow my thinking.

Having tagged your post under Italy only, i don't think that you will receive any good advice about Greece.

One of the typical honeymoon destinations is Santorini, but it is more famous for the terrific views and the famous caldera and less for it's beaches.
However there are some great beaches such as Perissa or the Red Beach ...

The Cyclades have many islands apart from Santorini that would be ideal for 1 week of relaxing though.
Paros, Naxos, Mykonos are some of the islands that have terrific beaches and the famous whitewashed houses....
Since you will have limited time it would be wise to choose an island with an airport, so that you can fly directly upon your arrival in Athens without losing time.

Save at least 1 day for Athens on your way back, as a buffer zone in case of winds etc.

August is the absolute high season in both Greece and Italy, i recommend you decide as soon as possible on your destination, so that you can start booking flights and accommodation.

Just 6 days for honeymoon?? add more days guys to make it more special! i would suggest atleast add 3 days for per place.
But if you still have 6 nights my suggestion is:

Rome 4 days + Florence 2 days. Forget about Venice, it could take half day to reach it, plus you would rush too much.

Rome -florence is only a 2 hour train ride and Flornce to Milan is another 2/3 hours, so no big deal.
Don't try to squeeze too much in and have fun!
ciao
Have a happy honeymoon!

Is there any way you can postpone and go at a different time? That's a long way to travel for six days. The first one or two are often lost to settling in and jet lag. Plus that's vacation time for much of Europe, so you may find many if not most hotels in your destination sold out or very expensive for your dates.

However, if that's really the only time you can go, decide ASAP on your destination, then book it. Italy is a few hours shorter in flight time. But either destination is a great spot for a honeymoon.

I like the advice you got above for Greece.

In Italy, I'd suggest: 4 days in Sorrento with day trips to: Capri, Pompeii, and by boat, some of the towns along the Amalfi Coast ( Positano, Amalfi). Then finish the trip with two days in Rome.

Just a FYI: You could base in Positano which is much more beautiful and romantic than Sorrento, but Sorrento is a better transportation hub for exploring the coast, Pompeii, and Capri. Since you have such a short trip, I think it would be better to base there.

Good luck and congratulations!

Hey MB,

It won't matter.

Go to one now.. Go to the other for an anniversary.

Enjoy your visit.

Are you choosing August because that is right after your wedding, or because that is when you can take time off?
I waited a couple weeks in between wedding and honeymoon, and it was a huge help. However, I realize that is not always possible.
It all depends on what flights you can get to maximize your budget and your time. That being said, I'd definitely go for Italy because the flight is likely to be shorter, and the travel less involved once you get there.

Greece would be a pure Honeymoon thing, if you would like to stay and spend some cozy time in Santorini - with aww inspiring views!
If you want to do more of sight seeing and visiting places (cathedrals, museums and monuments) then go to Italy.

I don't know if you have ever been to Greece, but it is much more than just Santorini.......
It's not a competition, but Greece is full of monuments, churches, archaeological sites and museums....

I would not do any beach location in Europe in August---wall to wall people and higher prices. Consider the Alps.
