Italy Itinerary - Need Transportation Help
My family is traveling to Venice in early March for 3 nights, to Florence for 4 days, & then to Rome for 5 days. Can anyone recommend best economical transport mode from Marco Polo airport to Canneregio area Venice? Also, what is best way to travel from Venice to Florence? By train or car?

At the airport, we took a sort of water bus from a company called Alilaguna. It was about $8 per person and they dropped you off very close to St. Mark's square and very close to the vaporetto stops. There are signs directing you at the airport to the dock where they leave from. I know it's cheaper than a water taxi and it was a very pretty way to approach the city.

Best way to travel between Venice-Florence is via the train. And quickest most comfortable train is on the Eurostar. You'll find several running each day between 2 cities. Can check schedules on website, www.trenatalia.com (or www.fs-on-line.com will also get you there). On the ES trains you'll also need to get a seat reservation. As you'll be in Italy in early March with not as many vacationeers, you can wait until you arrive in Venice ---buy train tickets at station itself a few days ahead of your travel dates OR purchase them at local travel agency.

The water bus won't get you close to Cannaregio. However, you can take the inexpensive ATVO airporter bus (departures every 30 minutes) or the even cheaper ACTV city bus no. 5 (every 30 minutes) from the Venice Airport to the central bus station in Piazzale Roma, and then walk across the bridge to Cannaregio. ATVO is better if you have luggage. You must be specific about which bus ticket you want to purchase. Concerning your other question, there is absolutely no reason to rent a car to simply go directly from Venice to Florence!
