Italy Itinerary Help

We are taking our 2 boys (16 & 13) to Italy early next June for a little over 2 weeks. This is their first time so we are trying to come up with a fun itinerary to places we loved.

Our tentative schedule is as follows: Airline tickets have already been purchased.

*Fly into Naples and either ferry or rent a car and drive to either Sorrento or Positano (we rented a car in Positano our last trip). Depending on home base, ferry to Capri, other Amalfi Coast towns and Sorrento for day at Pompeii. 5 nights
Drive or ferry/train to Rome - 3 nights
Drive to either Cititavecchia or Piombino port and ferry to Sardinia -- 5 nights on Sardinia
Train from Sardinia to Venice - 3 nights
Fly out of Venice

My husband and I have been to all the above except Sardinia. We wanted to add Sardinia because it is new for all and b/c kids love the beach/water.
Would welcome feedback and suggestions.

Thank you.

I touched on the car thing in your other thread, but you really won't find it much help on the AC or in Rome, so I would pick it up on Sardinia. However, five nights may be a bit tight for Sardinia and eat into your Rome and Venice time too much--have you considered Ponza or Elba or Giglio? Also, the southern Tuscan coast has fantastic beaches and hiking, just brainstorming some alternatives that could save you a good bit of time.
