Italy itinerary

I know you ahve all seen this same message before, but my wife and I want this trip to be special and many of you are far more experienced with Italy than I am. This is our second trtip to Italy (previous trip was to Venice). Is the following reasonable as far as too many stops or not enough time in each city?

Positano 3 nites
Sorrento 3 nites
Rome 4 nites
Florence 5 nites (includes 2 day trips
Siena 3 nites (2 day trips)
Milan 1 nite (before flying out in AM)

Thanks for your help

David

Hi David,

Nice itinerary.

Any particular reason for packing up and moving from Positano to Sorrento and from Florence to Siena?

Some of my comments are the same as those of ira. But assuming you have some reason (such as to experience a special hotel) for moving such short distances between Positano and Sorrento, and between Florence and Siena, I'd say it's a nice itinerary.

My only suggestion would be that if you don't have good reasons, you might consider staying put in one of each of those pairs of places and visiting the other on day trips. Or alternatively, if you like to wander, pick a couple of places farther away, and with a different ambience.

Your total trip comes to 19 nights. For me, that would be split among 4 or 5 locations, each different in character and surroundings. I would probably pick a couple of country inns and a couple of city locations (with Rome certainly being a city location). But I enjoy moving about and experiencing different things. Good luck.

What are your plans for the Positano and Sorrento portions of the trip? I notice that you don't mention any sidetrips (Capri and/or Pompeii, for example). If no sidetrips are planned, then I would favor reducing that part by a day and adding it to Rome.

Thanks for your quick repsonses. We had wanted to stay in Sorrento for 6 nites because of our desire to visit Naples, Capri and Pompei as well as Sorrento and day trip to Positano. But the hotel we want the Bellevue Syrene only has 3 nites available even 5 months before our trip.

Therefore we would stay in Positano for 3 nites and visit Ravello, Amalfi, and Paestum.

Also we will be visitng some tonws in Southern Tuscany Cortona, Arrezzo, Montepulciano etc so Siena seems closer than Florence and the city of Siena itself seems interesting.

With that further explanation, I say, "Go for it!"
