My husband and I are spending a few days in Venice and then taking a train overnight to the Amalfi area in early September.

I am torn about spending 4 nights in Sorrento (Tramontano) as I've always wanted to stay at the Hotel Santa Caterina/Amalfi. Currently I have us staying at both for 2 nights but not sure if thats a good idea. It seems as though Sorrento is a great base.

It depends on what you want to do in your 4 days. If you're more interested in exploring the coastal towns, then it's much easier if you're based in Amalfi. If, however, you want to go to Pompei, Herculaeneum, Mt. Vesuvius, Capri or Naples, it would be easier to use Sorrento as your base for a portion of your time. Some on this board will insist you stay one night on Capri to truly experience the island at its best. That's too much packing/unpacking for me, and, with only 4 days, you have to accept that you can't do everything.

Good. Stay there.

Sorrento, as noted, is good if you want to see Pompei, Herculaeneum, Mt. Vesuvius or Naples.

Amalfi is better if you'd like to visit Paestum.

You can get to Positano and Capri from either.

My Lady Wife would prefer to park for 4 nights rather than pack and unpack.

How are you getting to the AC, via Naples or Salerno?

Thanks to the both of you, I will do some thinking, I am leaning towards doing both and sucking up the packing unpacking but we'll see. Fun decisions!

I-going to amalfi via Naples, sound ok? Didn't think train went to Salerno. Any words of wisdom?

I don't usually like 2-night stays, but in this case, I would stick to your original plan. Amalfi and Sorrento are very different from each other, as are the hotels you've picked. I think you'll find Santa Caterina much more luxurious and upscale than Tramontano, if that matters.
