Mittens? Had you been in Florence, Tuscany, or Rome last October you would have needed your swimsuit!

I was in central Italy last November and indeed found it very warm
BUT, unless I'm travelling in the dead of summer, I always take a thin pair of fleece gloves (dry quickly)with me, along with a very lightweight foldable rain jacket. All you need is one damp slightly chilly day to mess up some travel plans.
Sometimes, that little pair of gloves makes the difference between being chilled and being comfortable, and since they take up so little space, why not?

We spent 9 weeks in Italy Oct.-Nov. '99. We were i Tuscany for most of October and had a variety of sunny warmish to rainy and chilly. I bought a cashmere/wool cape which was a lifesaver.

Probably not mittens. Throw a pair of leather gloves in your suitcase just in case. I was in Italy in Nov/99 and a couple of evenings I would've worn gloves if I had any.

I was in Rome and Florence in mid-October last year. Rome was still pretty hot. Florence was spring weather but chilly in the morning and evening.

I've only been twice and both times were in Oct. You may need a sweater in the evenings, but I unded up wearing a short-sleeved T-shirt in Rome because everything else I had was too heavy. Just layer and you'll be fine.
