We are thinking about going to Italy in March, trying to take advantage of cheap airfares. It will be our first trip there. I was just wondering what everyone thought about going at that time of year. I hope to go to Rome, Venice and Florence. Any ideas what the weather will be like? What clothes to pack? Will everything be open?

I went to Italy for the 1st time during the month of March. The weather was fine, cold but not freezing - the same weather at home in the NYC area when I left. It rained one day. Everything was "open" and not overcrowded but I expect that for the Jubilee year you can't do much to avoid the crowds, especially closer to the holidays. I also remember the Rome marathon was happening then. Do bring a winter coat and clothes you can layer but of course check the weather reports days prior to your departure. Italy is beautiful and going there in March didn't keep me from returning again and again. Don't forget to throw your coins in the fountain - it works!

My first trip was in March. It was cold and damp enough for a wool coat, but we didn't need hats or gloves (had them in case though). Did use umbrella at night on the Amalfi Coast. We also went to Venice, Florence and Rome. Rome actually got up to the low 70's a couple of days. Everywhere was wonderfully uncrowded - a very big plus! Except for the line for the Ufizzi. It was Easter vacation and there were mobs of school tours. Make sure to get advance tickets.

We were in Italy in March a few years ago. It was in high 60s and sunny in Rome and cooler and damper in Florence. I had a trench coat with liner which I used in Florence. Take layers and light weight wools and you'll be fine.

Thanks for all the advice! It is always tough to pack light and warm, but we will have to figure out a way. Can't wait!
