Hi folks

I am willing to go to Italy for my honeymoon in Dec. I would be there from 16th -27th Dec.
First, is it good idea to go to Italy at that time of the year? I just want to make a memorable honeymoon. Would be in Rome for 4 nights, 2 nights in Florence, 3 nights in Venice, 1 night in Verona. What else you can reommend to spend 2 nights in Italy? Will fly to Paris on 27th for 4 nights.
Please give as much info as possible.

Verona can be easily done as a daytrip from Venice.

I would add another night in Florence or even the two nights and you can do a day trip out of there as well. You don't want to spend so much time moving and traveling.

Well, it's not the ideal time of year for Italy. And especially not for Venice. In the winter it's subject to high tides (acqua alta) which swamp low-lying parts of the city. They put up boardwalks to walk on.

I count only 11 nights in Italy. So I'd add the single extra night to Florence, where there's lots to see indoors. And I'd skip the one night in Verona. While interesting to visit, changing hotels is more trouble when the weather's not so good. So keep the changes to a minimum.

I hope I haven't discouraged you away from Venice. It's the most romantic of cities, and you'll be able to see it when it's not deluged by visitors.

We have visited Venice three times in late December. High tides can make life a bit tricky, but it is not as if all of Venice is inundated. The area around San Marco sees the highest water, but the area around Rialto floods much less. If you are choosing a hotel, select in Dorsduro or closer to Rialto.

Remember, it is tidal, so the water rises, and then goes away. Many hotels have a supply of rubber boots for guests. You might be stuck for an hour or two, but not for the whole day.

Venice is pretty magical at that time of year. Yes, it is cold and damp, often foggy. Vistas appear and then disappear; you hear the Minoan Line ferry heading down the Guidecca canal for Pireaus, engine thudding, fog horn going.

Yet you can’t see it. Magical.

We visited Italy for a month in December/January a few years ago and encountered unseasonably warm weather and mostly sunny days. In Venice we did experience some fog but this made the place seem charming and mystical. wew were also lucky enough to get some sunshine also. Wherever you want to go you cannot go wrong. There is plenty to see and do no matter what the weather.
