Italy fashion for exercise????
Can anyone tell me what the italians are wearing these days to run outdoors? In the US I would wear short running shorts and a sports bra, obviously not going to fly over there. I will be midway through a marathon training program when I leave for Italy for 7 weeks in October so I have to continue while I am overseas. I can't run for 15-20 miles in sweats or I'll likely drop dead. Anyone seen running fashion over there lately that can give me a hot tip? I rarely saw runners in the smaller towns and I dont' remember what they were wearing in the larger ones. Help!

In October/November it starts to be pretty cold in most parts of Italy. In winter in Rome, I have seen many people doing jogging at the Villa Borghese park and some of them would wear those tight fitting pants made by Adidas, Nike or Diadora, plus a t-shirt and if it's cold a sweatshirt. I have seen other people wearing just a normal gymn outfit (pants and zip jacket), the one with stripes on the sides of the pants and jacket, with a t-shirt or a long sleeve cotton sweatshirt underneath.
Bottom line: dress in layers.

Ah yes, the infamous european bare all tighty-tights, I was afraid of that, LOL. I guess I'll have to get one of those dri-fit t-shirts and the tighties and sweat it out! Funny, I think it's still hot in Italy in October, last year it was 85 and hot on November 1st! I'm always warm, figures there would be a heat wave when I was there. Thanks for the advice.

Culturally speaking, their ideas about women's clothing are a bit different than ours and yes, the men there can be a bit "over zealous" so to speak. I was in Sicily 5 years ago, in sweltering July, and I was wearing shorts and a tank top and I was literally "hissed" out of an open air market in Palermo by a gaggle of old ladies who thought I was dressed inappropriately (FYI we are staying in Sicily for 3 weeks after the mainland). I was sooooo embarrassed and my husband was too. I wouldn't be caught dead in running shorts and jog bra in any part of Italy even if I was running! As person who loves to travel, I always try my best to be respectful of other cultures but in this case I mostly don't want to be embarrassed

Well according to my daughter who was in Rome the month of June all the younger women (teens and early 20's) wore real low cut jeans with the top of their bright colored thongs showing a very tight high cut tops. They even wore these outfits when they went to hospitals to visit grandparents and other older relatives. And she said no one battered an eye. And I have seen photos of this. So I don't imagine that anyone would get to excited about running shorts and a sports bra, at least in Rome, LOL.

Not that there's anything wrong with that (as Seinfeld says), it's only that some women appreciate that and some other don't, especially when you're there minding your own business, exercizing, and don't want to be bothered by men.
Try to wear shorts and sports bra in Oct/Nov in Italy and you'll either get italian guys whistling at you or you'll get such a cold that you'll regret not having worn anything a little heavier!!!!

Yes, no doubt in the bigger cities such as ROme and Milan, the young women can dress just as skimpy as anywhere else. However, we travel Italy pretty rural, smaller towns off the beaten path, Sicily etc. Even a big city like Naples would not be a good place to dress in such a way. It seems to be more acceptable to be daring and baring with fashion in the north. The south is a completely different planet. Much more old fashioned and culturally very different from the north. The people become much more fashion forward as you travel from ROme north, the University of Bologna's students sport some of the wildest clothing I've ever seen and they can definately pull it off. Being in the south is a whole other deal but I love it best, especially Sicily, it's the difference in the people that makes it so special.
