Seems like a lot has been covered in the replies you've received. I'd just like to add that I have been to Europe many times and have cruised Venice to Barcelona for 12 days as well. While the cruise was lovely, I would say that since this is your husband's first trip there, I personally would not choose to cruise. He will never get the true experience of Europe if you are not doing a land tour. Seeing only port cities is not the same as experiencing other non-port cities, traveling between them, and seeing these places at night. Immerse yourselves in the culture and save the cruise for later in life.

Hi A,

> We were thinking of cruising to the Greek Islands from Venice. ... Is it worth it?<

Some people find cruising wonderful. Others find it a bore.

You are going to have to be more definite. Are you thinking of going on a smaller ship - eg, Prinsendam - or one of the mega-vessels? How many days?

>....we'd like to do something that both of us have never done together...

You haven't yet visited Italy together.
How long do you have overall? You can easily spend 3 weeks in Italy.

Allie50,

If you are going to Greece and its islands, are you sure also want to go to the Amalfi coast? You might have more fun seeing Northern Italy -- Venice, Padova, Verona and some views of the Lakes.

We just got back from Greece and thanks to Heimdall and Weadles etc we had an amazing trip. I love Amalfi too - Positano particularly. I agree with Heimdall about skipping Crete and going to Naxos or Paros. We met a couple in Santorini who were on Crete briefly and made me feel grateful we did not book Crete instead of Santorini or Naxos. I would still go to Crete but only if my trip was solely visiting all of the islands and nothing else.

We took the Blue Star ferry from Santorini to Naxos and again from Naxos to Athens. It was great. Personally, I would not take a cruise other than transportation to and from destinations - it seems like a waste of time that could be spent exploring destinations.
