Italy 1st timer - 10 days where to go?
Hi All,
My boyfriend and I are going to Italy in November and as we have limited time we would really appreciate some assistance building a great itinerary.
From Australia we are flying to Abu Dhabi for the Grand Prix then have a direct flight to Milan and fly back to Abu Dhabi from Rome.
Flights:
14th Nov (2am) - Abu Dhabi to Milan: Arrive at around 6am
24th Nov (6.15am) - Rome to Abu Dhabi
The main places we want to go are Venice, Florence, and Rome with some day trips/or stop overs to some of the nearby towns, I have heard it is not worth seeing Milan. I have heard that Cinque Terre, Siena, Verona, San Gimignano and Lucca are great to see but not sure what we will have time to see.
We are the type of people that like to wander around and see the main tourist sights, look in shops, and try the local cuisine, we don't want to go into every Museum and Cathedral but would still like some suggestions of what to visit.
Looking forward to reading your responses - I appreciate any help I can get!
Alex

If possible change your ticket so you arrive in Venice. If you can't, then as soon as you land take the train to venice. With your early arrival you'll be there mid-to-late morning. You also have the added benefit of not being completly out of whack in terms of jet lag as you'll have been in Abhu Dhabi beforehand.
If the cities are your main interest then split them up 3/3/4 depending on where you think you have the most interest. Perhaps do 4 in Florence and use the extra day for a day trip into the countryside. I would skip Siena as a destination for a day trip as you will already be spending all of your time in cities.

flights almost always cheapest to Milan
so almost always enter there and train around
trenitialia.it seat61.com regional trains 5 euro per hour
double for fast trains always stay flexible hop on
book at station... route for me
Milan around the Duomo is expensive but ok a couple of hours
train for you to PortoFino www.metropole.it my fav there also
perfect for jump off to cinqueterre.com walk to ferry/train
on to www.lucca.info maybe Siena then Rome Florence Venice
sirmione.com(Hotel Eden) Milan.
All this you could do training no more than 2-3 hours on
train days... good sites budget city guides eurocheapo.com
Otel.com booking.com betterbidding.com for great hotel
deals... basically just sort of a round robin from Milan
Happy Travels!

I think your current plan is great for a first trip to Italy. I wouldn't plan day trips as you have little enough time in these 3 great cities as it is. As uflecko suggests leave Milan immediately upon arrival for Venice, spend 3 days there, train to Florence, spend 3 days and train to Rome for 4 days. There is so much to see and do, even without lots of museums, that you will be busy from arrival to departure.
Have a great trip!
