i plan to do a car trip from Rome to Naples to amalfi coast and capri by boat. We are 4 in the family. Would be using a sedan car as we have luggage. This is in Oct 23
Advice 1. which route to take to sorrento---Option 1 From Naples ,pompeii ,ravello,Amalfi, Positano ,Sorrento or option 2 is Naples to sorrento and then to amalfi etc
2. also need to know a good AirB&b to stay .

New rules allow only certain license numbers to drive on alternative days in specific directions on the AC.. You will have to get that information when you pick up a car. We find trains and ferries cheap and easier that the hassle of a car on the AC.

I actually enjoyed driving the AC road. We traveled each time in late September so the roads were not congested with traffic. Busy in some areas, but definitely doable. We used a compact vehicle each time, you mention a sedan, big difference. But late October you should be fine. I don’t believe the new rules relative to driving on certain days on the AC are applicable in October so you should be OK. Also the ferry service amongst the AC towns is very limited in October. Buses are a good alternative to travel between the towns, although again the schedules may be limited in October. I have never travelled to Naples via car (took the ferry from Sorrento) and based on the traffic in Naples I am not sure that it is a good idea. Rome to Sorrento is an easy drive on the A1 highway being about 3+ hours.

I agree with bilboburgler. There's no need for a car down on the AC. You won't be parking at your accommodations and it will be an albatross. Why not fast train from Rome to Naples and have a car pick you up and take you to your next stop on the AC. Everyone will be able to enjoy the ride on that beautiful highway and see the sights stress free. It's not a road for a big sedan, especially if you've never driven it before. You can stop along the way, for a limoncello tasting, for instance, and/or at any of the many overlooks.
