Italian wine experts!
A friend in Italy recommended we buy a red wine and we have found it in Bangkok. We ate at a nice LIMONCELLO restaurant last night and had a bottle of "Masi" Valpolicelo (sp). It was a really great wine. A very upscale department store sells a red Valpolicelo called "MAZZI." We bought a bottle of that, but have not yet tried it. I wonder which is the REAL one our friends from Italy are saying is sooooo good. Is it Masi or is it Mazzi?
Anyone with a comment to offer?

I appreciate the responses. We really enjoyed the Masi, but have not yet opened the Mazzi. I guess Masi is the name everyone recognizes. But the store where we bought Mazzi is really very upscale! We'll hope for the best. I'll try to let you know how it is when we drink it. In any case, thanks for all the replies!

SydneySteve,
Liguria is mentioned in "Italy's Noble Red Wines" as a historical footnote.
One would certainly have be an "expert" to have much experience with wines from the region.
I really like the recent valpolicellas from ZENATO (their DOC is less than $10. and their much better "Ripassa" is less than $20. - the currently avail '01 is the best since the great '97, and the '99 is close.
The Wine Advocate and Spectator have reviewed hundreds if not thousands of Italian wines in the last several years, but I could not locate anything from Liguria in a very superficial scan.

Yes Mikemo, Italy is a land of contrasts in terms of both cost and quality. I will be interested to try the desert wine of the Cinque Terre region when we are there soon and I know there are a few light reds that are OK from the hills near Portofino but I guess we will have to buy a few barolos and brunellos etc. to enjoy the views with. Thank you for your help.

This is being topped by someone who enjoys Carlo Rossi's jug chianti (can I call it a modest little table wine?) Obviously, I've a lot to learn, and I think maybe I can learn it from you folks. Thanks and please continue your discussion. J.
