Italian Music
I like italian music but I am not very knowledgable about it. I don't like opera or tenors like Pavaroti or Boccelli not rap or dance or hip hop. Can anyone suggest some good italian modern singers and songs that I can listen to? Thank you

I can suggest the mythic MINA with her wonderful voice who has sang real great songs like "parole parole parole", "se telefonando", "grande grande grande", " e se domani" just to cite a few of them.
Try also Adriano Celentano, especially his songs like "azzurro" (very popular in Italy), "con 24.000 baci" "una carezza in un pugno" and the more recent "così come sei".
or Lucio Battisti, who died a few years ago and who has left unforgettable songs like "i giardini di marzo", "non è Francesca", "la canzone del sole", "mi ritorni in mente", "acqu azzurra, acqua chiara" and many others. Try the "best of" collections of all these singers in order to enjoy the real best of them. They are pillars of the italian popular music

I suggest Gianna Nannini. And I second the recommendations of Eros Ramazzotti and Nek. There is also a guy with name Tiziano Ferro who was quite popular all over Europe last year, but he is more into Rap I think.

Dean Martin??? Singing that's amoreeee? about pizza bella, pasta fasool (which in REAL italian is actually PASTA E FAGIOLI) and tarantella and the rest in english?
Dean martin belongs to the american heritage, not to the real italian one. In Italy we know him just for some movies with Jerry Lewis.... not for his songs that are not real italian.

I picked up a compilation called Ambient Luxe about a year ago and there's a wonderful song on it called "Bossa Per Due" by an Italian guy named Nicola Conte. I haven't heard any of the rest of the songs on Conte's album -- also called Bossa Per Due -- that contains it, but from the write-up in the All Music Guide (see link below) it sounds very interesting.

There's also another Conte, but I don't know if they're any relation. When I was last in Cinque Terre, the guy driving the shuttle van from the Vernazza parking lot had on a tape by Paola Conte and my then-girlfriend and I liked it so much that he gave it to us.
About him the All Music Guides says: "The craggy-voiced Italian singer, pianist and composer Paolo Conte was born in the northern city of Asti in 1937; a poet and painter as well as a musician, he first earned attention during the late '60s and early '70s as the creative force behind hits from Adriano Celentano and Patty Pravo."

Raf, Eros, Zucchero ---tutto bene!
Also Michele Zarillo, and Massimo di Cataldo are pretty good.
I have an album called Canzione d'Amore that is a collection of songs with contemporary artists and is pretty good.

Also Giorgia has a good voice. Last year there came out her "best of" cd even though many good songs were kept out. Anyway one of her latest popular songs is "gocce di memoria". She has a great voice, I think you might like her music (other songs by Giorgia are: "e poi", "di sole e d'azzurro", vivo per lei" in duet with Bocelli, but it is not opera, beware!, and "marzo"

Tiromancino is a popular band in Italy now. Their music is so beautiful and their music videos are very touching. I've a few of their lastest CDs and love to listen to them wish a glass of wine and long bath.
