WE have a crazed long route to Athens which includes a stop and 5.5 hr layover in Istanbul. Do we have any options to store luggage and make a quick trip into the city or nearby environs????
If you mean Ataturk airport: http://www.ataturkairport.com/en-EN/...yServices.aspx
But I don't think 5.5 hours is long enough as you have to allow time for check-in. For transport: http://www.ataturkairport.com/en-EN/...portation.aspx

You have to have a visa to enter Turkey if you are American.
You can buy a visa at the airport.
There are usually long lines at Immigration.

We did it in Warsaw a few year back with a 6 hour layover. But our bags were checked through so we didn't have to deal with that part. The tense bit was one of those unexplained travel phenomena . . . multiple taxi drivers around the Old Town refused to take us to the airport.
So just do the math. 5.5 hours - 1 for arrival - 1/2 hours into Sultanamet - 1 hour return to airport - 2 hours for check-in, the double securities etc = 1 hour. And this is if everything clicks perfectly.
