time to kill at Istanbul Ataturk airport

We have several hours to kill while transferring through Ataturk. Looking to see if anyone is aware of any shopping easily accessible and in close proximity to the airport

Ataturk Airport is a distance south of Istanbul itself. Not really good for a quick with limited time although a metro exsits for a transfer.
A Convention / Congress center is across the major highway that passes this area but I do not believe it has any shopping.
The airport itself has a nice selection in a duty free shop, turkish souvenir items, turkish delight in some other shops.
Also numerous deluxe shops like Vakko , Versace, Ferragamo and such places. Thus the ability to take some time to wander through these located in a long mall like area.

watch for the prices of any food or drink items- they are very expensive.
A fast food place also - Burger King ? not cheap either.

If you have no visa issues, the Galleria mall is about a 10-15 minute easy drive by taxi, towards the city. It is usually open till 10PM.

I don't know where you are from (Australia), but Americans have to have a visa to enter Turkey. If you leave the airport you are entering Turkey.

If you leave the airport, you will have to go through security all over again, and security at Istanbul Airport (took us 4 hours to get through security, passport control etc. to get to our plane) is a NIGHTMARE.

Visa for Americans is $20 cash. We were in Istanbul last October and November and flew out to Nevsehir and Izmir (2 separate trips), and departed for USA - all from Ataturk. We experienced no problem with security or passport control.

My recollection is that compared to other airports, there is not as much retail space at Ataturk.

Australians are also liable for the US$20 visa, it can be easily bought in the arrival hall before you head to immigration. We were in Istanbul Ataturk this time last year & at that stage there was little to do except window shop. Take a book. Trotsky
