Isle of Wight walking bases

Hi there, I'm looking to spend eight or nine nights on the Isle of Wight in early September on a walking holiday. I'd like to complete the coastal walk but not change lodgings every night, so I'm wondering about picking two bases to access hikes on different areas of the island. I prefer self-contained flats in smaller seaside towns with good public transit access. Ventor and Totland or Yarmouth look appealing.
Any advice welcomed. Thanks!

I've only been to the Isle of Wight twice (well 3X but once was just a short day trip over when staying in Lymington) - so others may have better suggestions but one place I'd personally consider is something along the 5 or 6 mile stretch between Sandown/Shanklin/Ventnor, and for the other end of the Island - Yarmouth
