Isle of Man

I went a long time ago for two nights when my youngest children were about nine and eight. I thought it might appeal to them but expected little interest myself.
I was quite wrong. Douglas and Ramsey are rather as I expected but in general it is a great place, Castletown, Peel and Laxey being particularly good.
Obviously the steam railway has historical appeal but so, less obviously, has the electric one which makes a perfect way of getting to the famous Laxey Wheel.

I visited IOM for a fortnight on a geographyy field trip many years ago. It certainly has character and would be an interesting place to visit either as a "destination" or as a "stepping stone" between Ireland and England/Scotland - there are boat connections as well as plenty of flights.
If you are planning on going, avoid the period when the TT races are on: you won't find a bed in the whole place.

Hi,
You just HAVE to visit the Isle of Man. It is a little gem in the middle of the Irish sea!!
A mixture of old and new - steam trains and Viking heritage to modern hotels and a thriving finance sector. We have our own currency and postage stamps. we are not part of the United Kingdom, but are of the British Isles. We have a Lieutenant Governor who is the Queen's representative on the Island. Our parliament 'Tynwald' is over a thousand years old and is the the oldest continuous parliament in the world. Once a year it sits in the open air and laws are read out in Manx (our native language) and in English.
The island has diverse coastal scenery from craggy cliffs and secluded coves to wide beaches and sand dunes. The rolling countryside includes one mountain -Snaefell where on a clear day you may see '5 kingdoms' - England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and naturally the kingdom of Mann!! We have horse trams, many heritage sites depicting the Story of Mann included castles and ancient burial sites to a thriving film industry nowadays. The unique landscape and pace of life attracts film -makers from around the world.
Sport is an integral part of the island - the Isle of Man TT (Tourist Trophy ) motorcycle races race around a 37 3/4 mile closed public road circuit that is known as the 'Mountain circuit'. The TT will celebrate their centenary in 2007, to car rallying, vintage hill climbs and many golf courses. The rich marine life in the sea around the island attracts Scuba divers and seals alike! Also we often see passing basking sharks offshore!
All in all there is much to see here. We have international class hotels -not too many! Also self catering accomodation and during the TT period in particular, the island people welcome visitors into their homes. The home stay scheme is run through the Isle of Man Tourist Board - a division of IOM Government.
You definitely should visit - but don't expect it to be quite like anywhere else!!

It's fantastic. A real escape. I try to go there as often as I can, and indeed I have several properties there too. But hotels such as the Hilton or Sefton are your best bet. Don't expect luxury though.
A great island, I adore it. No designer shopping though, no shopping worth bothering with at all actually, but you don't go there for that.
