The only time I smelled bad things in Venice, was one time, one place where they had drained a canal and were doing repair work. That smelled a little bit sewerish.

I spent 3 days in Venice the latter part of Sept., 2007. None of us in our party of 4 noticed any smell from the canals. We also experienced the flooding in St. Mark's Square -- again no smells. Didn't need AC then, but AC in August is a must.

No smell. Very hot. We were there the very last days of July and some of August. It was 98 degrees. The problem with Venice in August is that it is only occupied by tourists. All the glass making on Murano shuts down for the whole month and all the locals get out of there. It was definitely not as magical cruising down the canal at night to see dark homes. Can you wait until September or are you all booked?
