Shrink,

Many years ago, my ex-husband and I lived in Munich for nearly a year. We are both Jewish and both grew up with friends who had grandparents with numbers from concentration camps on their arms. When we first arrived in Munich, we were going to stay at a campground. We got on the bus and when the driver announced its destination--Dachau--we looked at each other and without a word, got off at the next stop.

Like Marilyn, there is no way I could possibly go there. While I agree that the Holocaust should not be forgotten so that history does not repeat itself (although it seems it has in lesser porportions, but still it seems somehow some people just don't seem to learn from it), for me it is too painful a memory and I could not go there.

However, if you really want to go, IMO, you should, and let your partner do what she wants to do during that time.

Hi All
First: since I'm not smart enough to remember my passwords, I had to re-register from my home computer - hence the new screen name: but Homeshrink = Shrink!
I had no idea when I posed this question that I would receive so many warm, heartfelt responses. I am really blown away by your comments. With respect to Marilyn and artlover, I understand how you must feel and totally respect that.
From all of your responses, I am indeed going to go. Wife will shop or do whatever. These kinds of things generally have an impact on me. Several years ago I visited the Arizona Memorial and while I knew no one who had died there, like others, have never forgotten it. Being a good ole boy from Texas, I haven't been to Ground Zero yet, but I'm sure that will be coming in the near future.
Well I just wanted to thank all of you who posted to this for your helpful insights and personal stories. I really appreciate you guys.

Shrink - as with most of the other posters here I say go to Dachau. I am of a sensitive nature but have been to Pearl Harbor and in 2002 I visited Ground Zero and next month going back to NY and will be going there again with friends that have never been.

When I go to Amsterdam I plan on visiting where Anne Frank and her family hid out until the Germans whisked them away.

A few powerful people have brought such grief to so many people...and what was accomplished? Nothing positive.
