Is there a web site for identifying Germany license plates?

We can't sleep, the heat has us up watching the 4:30 am insomniac's special on the German channel Das Erste...basically someone sticks a props a camera against the windshield of trains going through Germany and you get the engineer's eye view. On this particular route, the engineer is a chain smoker, the the view is obscured by clouds of smoke...
anyway, we saw lots of German cars this weekend on our drive to and from Brugge and were stumped trying to identify where they were from based on the letters on the plates...we know M means Munich, N means Nurember, HG is Heidelburg, BB is Baden-Baden (I think), etc...is there a web site that gives you the complete list? Saw a lot of plates Sunday afternoon from OB...where's that? Osnabruck? TIA.

BTilke:

There are lots of sites, try this one

http://www.kennzeichen.org/

or do a google search for "kfz-kennzeichen"

hope this helps.

Phil.

First thing that pops to my mind: HG is not Heidelberg, but Bad Homburg, close to Frankfurt.

Heidelberg would be HD.

You might try these sites, too:

True story: Your town can be identified by the plates on your car. Dachau is a suburb of Munich. In the 1970s the residents of Dachau were still being hassled at the borders because of their DH plates. Many went into Munich and found ways to register the car there to avoid the Dachau stain. Thought I would throw that into the conversation here.....

Pick up a copy of a ADAC highway atlas. They are available in most newsstands, book stores and gas stations. They contain an index of all the letter codes for various cities and towns.
