Is there a secure place at Orvieto's train station to leave luggage so that we might walk the town?

Is there a secure place at Orvieto's train station to leave luggage so that we might walk the town?
We have to turn in our car in Orvieto and then take the train to Rome on an open ticket. Orvieto looks to be so charming that I'd hate to miss it for lack of a secure place to stash the luggage for a few hours.
Does anyone have a solution to this? Thanks.

If you're there during their office hours, ask the car rental agency to hold your luggage while you take the finicular to the old part of Orvieto. The agency is probably within a couple blocks of the station.

Hello muskoka, sometime ago a poster stated that there was a place to leave luggage in Oriveto. If memory serves me right it seems like when one left the train station and turned left it was down about a block. I am sorry I don't remember the exact details. But perhaps if you check with someone at the train station they can help you.

Hello again muskoka, I did a search..and a Fodorite said that leaving the train station about a block left of the train station and across the street was a hotel by the name Europa. They paid the hotel to keep their luggage while they visited Orvieto.

Thank you, ira and LoveItaly. This is my first return trip to Italy since my student days. Rome, Venice, Florence and a stay in the Pienza area are the teasers this time around.

Hi, All: Just back from a wonderful vacation in Italy and wanted to let you know that the Hotel Europa in Orvieto is no more, meaning that there is really no place now to conveniently leave luggage if you want to explore the town and then catch a train into Rome. We paid extra to Hertz to return our rental car in Orvieto on a Sunday and the agent did not show up, leaving us with a dilemma as to what to do with the keys. I left them behind Hertz's air conditioner and notified Hertz Italy (they were not pleased with me). Tough - Hertz's problem! Great trip, otherwise.

We'd love to hear about your wonderful vacation - glad you loved Italy! I'm curious about your phone conversation with the Hertz people concerning their failure to pick up the rental car. (These are the kind of scenarios that I anticipate happening when I travel!) What was their response or suggestion?

It was a dream vacation, taken with two very good friends and included many of the must-sees in Rome, Venice, Tuscany, primarily Pienza, Montepulciano, Montifollonico, Montichiello and Cortona, and Florence. More to come on all that.
As for Hertz, the first agent to whom I spoke insisted that the problem was mine and that maybe, I could leave the car key at Hotel Europa. The second agent knew that the Hotel was closed, but could offer no solution as to where to leave the key, so I left it where it could not be seen from the street and notified both Hertz and my travel agent, who is trying to retrieve the 10 euros we paid to have the agent there for us when we dropped off the vehicle. Hertz, however, isn't generally a pain to deal with - but we shall see!
Picking up the car in Florence was a breeze as I had arranged to get it at a location that was a distance from the centre of the city so as not to have to negotiate Florentine traffic.

Hertz in the US may be easy to deal with, but your agent will likely be dealing with Hertz in Italy - which will be quite an adventure for her/him.

Rome: Hotel Sant'Anselmo on the Aventino hill first two and last two nights. Excellent hotel with very good service, elevator, squeaky clean room (chandelier, balcony, gorgeous drapery, marble bathroom, good lighting, internet service in room, delightful garden with orange trees on back patio & killer choc. scones); excellent breakfast; 30 min. walk from Circus Maximus, decent restaurants, Hop on/Hop off bus.
Venice: Hotel Antiche Figure to which I would return in a heartbeat. Stone's throw from Scavi Bridge and vaporetto stop(10 min. ride to P. San Marco); adequate breakfast, helpful front desk staff, gorgeous room with views of the Grand Canal; elevator; very clean.
Florence: Hotel Davanzati: ideally located; 10 min. walk to Uffizi, Ponte Vecchio & Duomo; 15 min. to Accademia and leather markets, large, clean room; very noisy happy hour downstairs if you happen to be flat on your back recuperating from long walks; helpful staff although simple requests had to be asked for twice (extra room key, extra pillow); excellent breakfast, elevator. But, the long flight of steps up to the elevator from street level - yikes! There were times when it would have been easier to just toss a blanket over me for the night!
Tuscany: La Saracina near Pienza; gigantic room; huge property with views that you'll never want to leave; best breakfast ever; within good proximity to hilltop towns; owner will make dinner reservations for you; only drawback - not much light in the room -many candles but inadequate electric light.
Stu: how right you are re: Hertz Italy. Travel agent still awaiting reply from overseas, although Hertz USA did respond with an apology.

Muskoka - thanks for your quick response - by the way, does "Muskoka" refer to Ontario?
We have a cottage in Haliburton (Lake Kushog) which allows my wife and I to almost compensate for our time away from Tuscany.

We used to have a cottage on Lake Muskoka but sold it several years ago because the area had just become too upscale and busy. We have since bought property on Skootamatta Lake about an hour from Ottawa and have built a retreat there. Haliburton is also a lovely area - we have friends who own a cottage there. Enjoy your summer!

you need to store your luggage while touring Orvieto, here is the info I got back from the Hotel Picchio about doing that:
