Just read somewhere that many of the museums and shops in Rome are closed on Monday. Does that include the Vatican, Basillica and/or Sistine Chapel?

According to my AAA book on Rome, yes. It says it is open 8:45 to 3 p.m. on Monday for the Museum and Sistine Chapel. Marilyn

I am not sure whether the Vatican is open on Monday as I was just there last week on Wednesday. Although it was open until 16.00 the Museum shut it's doors to new arrivals after 12:30 (meaning those in the doors before 12.30 had until 16.00 to exit -- those who arrived after 12.30 were out of luck for entry). My suggestion is to arrive early on whatever day you decide to go.
