Is the Rhine flooding too?

A friend of mine is taking a trip to Europe in mid-September. She is scheduled to take a cruise on the Rhine.

The Danube and the Elbe are flooding but does any one know if the Rhine is also affected? I've seen nothing to suggest that it is.

I read the German news reports daily.
Nothing so far has come to my attention that described flooding in the Rhine valley. The absence of evidence is not always evidence of absence, however.

There has been considerable discussion of the flooding problems in Dresden, Magdeburg and other cities along the Elbe where dams and levees have collapsed. But there has been no mention at all of any cities along the Rhine being in danger.
The heaviest rainfall was over the areas of south central and south eastern Germany, the Czech Republic, and Austria. The main river systems draining these area include the rhe Danube, Moldau (Vlatava), and the Elbe.

In Dresden, Passau and Prague, the flooding situation is improving because water levels have dropped, but the crest of the high water is moving northward. The cleanup will be massive and damage is wide spread.

If I read anything about the Rhine in the news tomorrow, Wed, I will post it here. I know a German student from Köln and I will ask her tomorrow afternoon when I see her if she has heard anything about flooding along the Rhine.

Adam:

No, no flooding of the Rhine this time. the main rainfalls were on the eastern part of cnetral Europe, draining to the Danube and the Elbe.

There was a slight surge of the Rhine about 10 days ago, but it never reached alarming levels, and now the level (at Basel) have returned more or less to normal.

Hope this helps

Phil.

Heavy rain, with hail and 70 mph winds have been preducted for southwest Germany. The Saarland, Rheinland-Pfalz and Baden-Wuerttemberg are involved.
I saw no warning of flooding because it is too early to tell what will result.
The German report predicted: Heftige Gewitter mit Hagel und starkem Regen.
That reads to me as heavy thunderstorms with hail and strong rain.

I don't care if it is isolated, the report predicted 70 liters of rain in a square meter. That is a lot of water coming down.
Unless quadrameter in German has some meaning other than a square meter, that is about 18 gallons of rain falling in an area of 11 square feet.
That means I would have nearly 400 gallons in my living room!! I have not seen that much rain in my whole yard in the month of August.
Bob:

We had these thunderstorms, too in Switzerland. There were a few mudslides causing serious damage, but these were confined to relatively small areas. Fortunately, there were no reports of people being hurt or killed.

As the whole storm blew over within a few hours, there is no risk of flooding.

Whereas to the 400 gallons in your living room: you did you arithmetics correctly (yes, a Quadratmeter is German for square metre), and it certainly felt that way, when you were caught outside by this thunderstorm, as I was, waiting for my tramway...

Phil

This morning's news report from German sources gives a grim forecast. Forecasters predict more heavy rain in Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt, Brandenburg and Norddeutschland (north Germany)
In some areas 40 liters of rain per square meter are expected.
That is not good news at all.
No mention of the Rhine.
My friend from Cologne has not heard of any problems with flooding in that area.
