Is Rome a walkable city? - Check out these links
Hi
I see that some posters are worried about the location of the hotel in Rome and how they will be able to get to the different locations. I have a couple of links that might be of some help First of all I have made a Google map of Rome that shows you where some of the attractions are located and you can find this map here: http://gardkarlsen.com/rome_italy_map.htm
Another useful link is http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ . This is a Google map tool where you can measure distances. With this you can zoom in on Rome (or any other place) and measure distances from one attraction to another.
Another useful page is http://mapfrappe.com/ . On this page there are two maps...first indicate a know area on the top map (e.g. an area of NYC)...and then zoom in on Rome on the lower map. Now you will get an outline of NYC on Rome and that should give you an idea when it comes to size.
Hope this helps
Regards

Buongiorno gard,
I just tried the comparison map. Very interesting! I learned that if I walk to work, it's like walking from Villa Borghese to the Pantheon and back again.
I never walk to work, yet I spend entire days walking around Rome. This might be a good way to "get in training" for my trips to Italy, and may even become a lifestyle change.
Thank you for the link!

Thanks for the wonderful links. In Texas, I used to walk w/my kids to my work sometimes, and it was encouraging to see that the distance wasn't much longer than our hotel to the Eiffel Tower will be this summer! Much appreciated.

Hi
I'm not sure why the Wikimapia link didn't turn out correct...but if you just copy and paste the entire link it should work

Hi
Glad you guys enjoyed the links It takes a bit of time to make the Google maps that I make...but it gives people a great way of visualizing where attractions are located in a city. I'm now in Bangkok and I look forward to making a Bangkok map too

you must stay in the center of the city. the whole point is to be able to walk out your door and find yourself surrounded by ancient things, cool shoe stores and sublime restaurants.
i would not stay anywhere but in the city center.
you need to walk the city and once you're in the center -- eveyrthing is walkable.
take the iJourneys.com iPod walking tours, they'll give you an exceptional grounding in the city as well as travel tips, restaruants, cafes, art history
and gelato places.
you must stay somewhere you can walk. if you are near a metro stop -- then you are not in the right place.

Hi
I'm just waiting for Google Street view to be available for Rome: http://maps.google.com/help/maps/streetview/ . At the moment it is just available for some of the larger American cities. But wouldn't it be fun to take a virtual stroll through Rome?

Just came back. Stayed near the Campo Dei Fiore and walked everywhere from there. We used a map to pick the general direction we needed to go and just headed out in that direction! We found little shops and sites that we probably would have missed had we tried to map out our every move. We had used Mappy.com prior to our trip - and never found many of the streets that it listed! Have a great time - we did.

While you are waiting for the new Google map, you can order "virtual walks" from www.european walks.com. I have the Rome and Venice walks.
