Malmo is a cute little city with a lovely canal near the center and park areas, but, of course, it isn't as interesting as Copenhagen.
My 70-year old Finnish mother lives in Malmo and has told me that crime has indeed been on the increase in recent years. What scares me is that some of the muggers even like to prey on the elderly. Now, I don't know if most of these types of crime is perpetrated by Swedes or by immigrants, but I do know from my mother that Sweden is no longer the socially conscious mecca that it was years ago.
I suspect that with respect to its immigration policy Sweden has bit off more than it could swallow and now its citizens are hurting.

Well it seems that Malmo is in itself most unspectacular and though the safety threat seems overblown it's just another reason to pass thru it to Lund. The train trip over the Oresund bridge-tunnel is spectacular, one reason for crossing the sound. Actually a great day trip entails training from Copenhagen via Malmo and Lund to Helsingborg, Sweden, where you take a ferry to Helsingor, Denmark (famed for its gaggle of alcohol and tobacco shops catering to day tripping Swedes to get these things cheaper than at home, and Hamlet's Castle- Kronborg Castle, and training back to Copenhagen. This excursion is called 'Around the Sound' and can easily be done in a day. You see the sound by crossing it twice and the bucolic Swedish farmlands between malmo and Helsingborg. Travel time about only 3 or 4 hours all told. If you don't care to stop in Malmo or Lund you can hop direct trains from Copenhagen to Helsingborg, Sweden. Trains, ferries run at least hourly or much more frequently.
