I would like to rent a car for my 5 day stay in Strasbourg and see the area. Is driving a car with traffic and road signs a difficult thing to do? Any suggestions would be helpful. thanks.

Hope this might help; from my recent trip report.

After reading about Underhill's difficulties in navigating the bridges in Rouen, I decided to have none of that or of dealing the odd signage so well explained by (I think) Just Retired in his posts. As with most things, the devil appeared to be in the details of understanding all that. So I bought a Garmin handheld iQue 3600 GPS, loaded it with a map of Europe, and listened to a very pleasant voice direct me through all the turns, including roundabouts. Except for a few aggressive drivers, the stress of driving was nonexistent.

......like most big cities, Strasbourg
isn't a lot of fun to navigate through.
Outside the city and in the little towns
you'll have no problem at all.

Relative to driving down the Champs Elysees at 5:00 pm (been there; done that), it'll be a breeze

Llamalady, above said it right. There is a tram system in Strasbourg, so you can park your car on the outskirts and take the tram in. Easy and fun.

When we stayed in Strasbourg we stayed at the Comfort Inn on the river. It was very easy to get in and out of the city from. we did day trips to colmar the Konnesburg(sp) castle and the route des vins. We also took a day trip to Baden-Baden. We used nothing more than a Michelin map of europe and got along fine. It helps more though if you have a navigator.

We stayed in the Black Forest and drove over to Strasbourg a couple of times. While there's lots of traffic in the city, the signs, we thought were easy to follow. There are large parking areas around the city, where you can park and catch a tram.
