Sorry, but it depends.
The area nearest the train station and the old Ghetto is pretty far away from San Marco which is tourist central in terms of sightseeing. It's about a half-hour of determined walking to SM, and not much faster by boat. The train station area is okay, but certainly not particularly charming, and the approach to the Ghetto area speaks a little of low-income with laundry hanging on lines. This is not a safety issue, just a little lower on beauty than other parts of Venice.

On the other hand, Cannaregio closer to the Rialto Bridge, along Strada Nuova, has lots of shops, museums, and churches to visit. It is not a heavily touristed area, so the shop prices are not as high as nearer San Marco.

If you've found a hotel that you like or that meets your budget, go for it.
I'd pick staying in Cannaregio over staying on the Lido or further away any time.

I completely agree with Elaine on this one. Cannaregio is one of my favorite areas for strolling, but I wouldn't pick the end toward the train station. We walked the whole length starting at the train station. It went from tourist central to slightly touristy around the Ghetto to sparsely touristed and atmospheric around the Madonna del' Orto church and vacinity; then it became populated with more locals and attractive little streets full of shops before getting very touristy again back toward San Marco.

My favorite two areas for central hotel location are just off Piazza San Marco or the Accademia Bridge area.

What are your criteria for a good place to stay? Are you thinking of Cannaregio because of price or some other attribute? You can get decent accomodations in the central tourist areas for good or great prices, depending on your requirements.

Hi Monica. Although we didn't spend a lot of time walking around in Cannaregio, from the time we did spend, I'd agree with Elaine too.

In fact, our favorite campo in Venice, besides Campo Santa Margherita in Dorsoduro, was the charming little Campo di Santi Apostoli, at the eastern end of Strada Nova. We happened across it around 5:00 pm one day and it was full of activity. It was fun to sit and eat pizza while watching the little kids ride tricycles, kick soccer balls, and chase pigeons in the golden glow of the afternoon sun.

It's a short walk east of that campo to the beautiful little Miracoli church which, I think, is also in Cannaregio.

I have been lucky enough to have been to Venice two different times. I've stayed in Cannaregio and San Marco and have to say that I really enjoyed Cannaregio much more.

I love being a tourist, but Cannaregio gave me the feeling that I was really living with the local Venetians. When leaving in the morning, it felt as if I was heading out with the locals to go to work, and coming back at night I felt again as if I was coming home with the rest of the locals. It is a very lively area with many shops and restaurants and the people are very friendly.

So although I liked the San Marco area (actually I love all of Venice), the next time I visit Venice I will probably stay in Cannaregio.
