Is Avignon worth a whole day?

yes! We spent 3 days at the BW in Villenueve-les-Avignon (check www.bestwestern.com- you won't want to eat anywhere else. We loved it so much last year that it's the only place we're repeating thi year, again 3 days. Wasn't thrilled by the walled city of Avignon, but we loved the area. If you're wine- folks, you'll love the easy and friendly tasting- nearly as easy as CA- or the Alsacian area. But it's a lovely part of France. And the Pont du Gard is seen easily in a half day- we just didn't go across the walking portion on the lower tier-- I have a fear of heights, and I was already getting tired of my husband doing the Eiffel tower w/o me, the Empire St. Bldg w/o me-- then I had 2 big glasses of wine, as I was bound and determined to go to the top of Notre Dame, and the darn things was closed. But enjoy Avignon and environs. Good info on winespectator.com for that area.

If your time is tight, I'd say spend less time on Avignon & visit the Pont du Gard. Avignon is a pretty city, and the Palace is nice, but not near as memorable as the Pont du Gard. Even my husband, who's not the ancient history buff that I am, was awed by the Pont and considered the trip well worth it. Just think - a water viaduct that's around 2000 years old, in the middle of the countryside.

My wife and I used Avignon as a base for a week in Provence and loved the city. It is definitely worth an entire day. That being said, Pont du Gard is a must see as well. If you try to cram Avignon and Pont du Gard in the same day you will come away dissapointed and frustrated with Avignon. I say this mainly because you WILL run into traffic and crowds in Avignon, and your frustration at running behind schedule will ruin the experience for you. If you can at all find an extra day I would recommend it.
