Is anyone else having trouble with the "search" function on this site?
I dozens of printouts of a search on "Paris REstaurants" from this site. Tonight I searched to see if anything new had been added and got nothing. Then I tried "favorite Paris restaurants", then "Paris Bistros" and received a similar response. I know those threads are out there.
Anyone know what's going on?

I don't use it a lot to be sure of this, but it seems to work a lot better with only one word searches or exact phrase searches rather than putting in several words. I just searched for the exact phrase "paris bistros" and it came up in seconds with one post that had that exact title. If you want all posts that have both those words in it, though, I think you can often get nowhere as when I tried that without checking exact phrase it just hung up and would not finish (I gave up after several minutes). I'd try to narrow it down to one word, for example put in bistros and then check "france" as country and you will get most of want you want -- same for restaurants with france checked, as there will not be so many from other places that you can't weed them out pretty quickly. I don't know what Fodors' problem is with this search thing, I use much more complicated search functions on sites with tons more text to search than Fodors messages, and they do not have such problems (like newspaper archives for an entire year or the entire Federal Register for a year).

Rome and Florence searches have not been working all day. for example is you ask for "rome" you get only a couple of the many posts that have been put up today. Can't get any answers for specific question posts. eg Rome hotels even though the posts are there on the Europe list. Very frustrating. Lots of lost posts today.

Yes!
I put in key phrases like "bus Seville Lisbon" looking for a conclusive post I'd responded to, and nothing came up... Even when I put in just "bus", the thread didn't come up ...went back as far as 1999 (when I didn't even know you guys!) and zip.
I also wish there was a way to pull up our "user" name (like "SharonM", etc...) so that it would pull up threads you'd contributed to...
(I've tried it, and it only pulls up SharonM where I have been referenced to...)
I, Unfortunately, do not have any answers on what to do about it.

Sharon,
Write to Danny Mangin or David Downing - - [email protected] - - and tell them you want this (they've already heard it from me). It IS a reason I "sign" the majority of my posts (though by no means all) - - "Best wishes, Rex". And it is highly unpredictable to see how well it retrieves posts that I have signed.
This was not my original motive, by the way. Ben Haines did/does it. He invited me to come here (from lonelyplanet/thorntree) - - I saw his posts, figured out quickly that he was a "senior statesman" here - - and wanted to emulate him.
